MaryLynn writes," One has Rhodam 1792 as son of
Obed 1722, which isn't possible- his mother would have
been about 63." Well the old rascal, Obed, married a
second wife in the mid-1780's, and father 4 more children
by the second wife.
O'Gorman is probably correct. She personally met and
talked to Obed's grandson, Peyton Calvert, in 1921.
Peyton was the 7th child of Rhodam. Rhodam was not
helpful in providing information; however the genealogy of
Obed's family is well document. Peyton insisted the
name was spelled as Colbert as shown on the census
records.
Rhodam had 3 wives and 13 children. His father, Obed, is
shown as having 10 children in O'Gorman's book;
however O'Gorman acknowledges that there could be
more (unknown) daughters by the first wife.
From the 1860 census:
Independent Hill, PR Wm
Rhoda(m) Colbert 69 Millwright p 520
Mary A. 53
Edward 20 farm labor
Albert 17 farm labor
Catherine 15
Robert 14
The IGI also lists Obediah 1827, George W. 1833 and
Mary 1835 as children of Rhodam and Mary Colbert.
I believe these to be the older sons in 1860:
Tudor Hall, Prince William, VA
Obediah Colbert 33 carpenter p 188
Mary C. 27
Martha A. 8
James L. 5
Sarah J. 3
Susan A. 1
Landsdowne, Prince William
George W. Colbert 27 farm labor
Sarah A 23
Anna L. 2
Sarah O. 6 mos
Edmond Pearson 19
The reason for my confusion is that brothers John 1692
and George 1694 both had sons Obed, 1719 and 1722.
One of these Obeds married Mary Gosling and had sons
Jesse and Obed, one of which is probably the father of
my Obed.
I know that this family has been extensively
researched, but I'm finding many discrepancies between
researchers. One has Rhodam 1792 as son of Obed 1722,
which isn't possible- his mother would have been about
63.
Does anyone know?
Thank you for your responses,
MaryLynn
