I am going to back track on my assertion that the Amos Messer found
in the Crawford County history for Troy township is Amos Mercer. He
may well be, but I am not finding any corroborating evidence. Most
Mercer researchers have Amos going to Armstrong County rather than
Venango County. And, none of them have any indication that he
stopped in Crawford County.
Put this on hold until we can find more to substantiate it. It would
be a great find if it is Amos Mercer.
On the other hand, the same document does substantiate that Chloe,
Job's wife was a Benn. Jobs brother in law, according to the
history, was Jonathan Benn. Jonathan's sister, Rebecca, married a
Pennington. This is of interest because the first Methodist Church
in Mifflin and Centre Counties was on land donated by the Pennington
family and was called the Pennington Methodist Church. But, the
records of this church are lost or misplaced.
