Christopher Johnston in his article "Neale Family of Charles County,"
published in 1912 in Maryland Historical Magazine, claimed that Anne Calvert and
Baker Brooke's daughter Mary was the wife of Raphael Neale (d. 1743) of Charles
County.
My problem with that claim is that she would have been years older than her
husband, and would have been nearly ninety years old when she died, if that's
true. The latter of which was almost an impossible task in the Chesapeake
at that time. The will of Mary Neale of St. Mary's County, widow of Raphael
Neale of Charles County, was written 29 Sept. 1760 and recorded 24 May 1763.
I can't find any evidence to support placing Anne Calvert's daughter as a
wife of Raphael Neale. Does anyone know of any documentation to that claim?
I think I may have found another possibility for what happened to Baker
Brooke's daughter Mary. Baker Brooke of "Delabrooke Manor" in Calvert
County
died testate between 19 Mar. and 26 Mar. 1678/9 leaving wife Anne, three sons,
and daughter Mary. His widow re-married Henry Brent (d.s.p. 1693), Gent., of
"Pitchcroft" in Calvert County; and in 1696 had settled in Prince Georges
County with her third husband, Richard Marsham, merchant. Richard Marsham died
testate between 14 Apr. and 7 May 1713, leaving only descendants by his first
wife Katherine. Before his death he and his wife Anne were involved in at
least eleven cases in the Prince Georges County Court; five of which involved
her directly as administratrix of Henry Brent.
But at the same time that Richard Marsham, his second wife Anne (nee
Calvert), and his family were settling in Prince Georges County, another family also
arrived there having come from Calvert County. Charles Beaven was granted
600 acres called "Hickory Thicket" in Calvert County on 15 Mar. 1696, but
immediately after was residing in Prince Georges County where he died testate
between 20 Jun. 1698 and 21 Jun. 1699. His wife Mary died testate between 28
Apr. 1712 and 13 Jun. 1713. Charles Beaven had provided well for all his sons
and daughters in his will, even giving land to his daughters. Mary's will,
even though attested to by her daughter and son-in-law, Thomas and Sarah
Blandford, made Richard Marsham the executor and sole legatee to her real and
personal estate. In the 24 Aug. 1713 accounting of her estate Marsham Warring
(grandson of Richard Marsham) was serving as administrator of her estate, as he
was also serving as his administrator to his grandfather's estate.
The chronology, locations involved, and family interaction lead me to
believe that Charles Beaven's wife Mary was the daughter of Baker Brooke and Anne
Calvert. I would appreciate any assistance in this matter.
