Since Joseph Whitaker's father was a cloth merchant, that makes sense. I
have located Colne where his father was born. Was it also a cloth center?
I read somewhere that the most important cloth of the mid1700s was linen,
that cotton was much later. I suppose wool would also have been important.
Here in rural USA at that time linsey-woolsey was the cloth of the pioneers.
It was a mixture of linen and wool. I also read that linen in England was
so important there was a law that people had to be buried in it!
Can you tell me anything about Colne? I suppose travel in mid1700s was by
horse or wagon. I would like to get Joseph's father James and his father
John back to the Whitaker estate in Whalley. But it seems the name is very
common there.
It's great fun trying to learn as much as you can about not only the lineage
but the life they lived.
I haven't a clue yet where in England my Calverts came from. I'm having a
hard enough time trying to separate them from the famous Calverts of Lord
Baltimore as mine also lived in northern Maryland.

Hi Cathy,
Armley is in a city called LEEDS,West Yorkshire ( I live in Leeds, and
Armley is 10
mins away!) It was mostly a textile place and alot of textile
factories were built there. It is still going strong and the oldest cloth
building in Armley is still here today and still trading. The building is
now a tourist attraction.
If i can help further feel free to ask.
Karen.

Hi Karen,
Can you tell me anything about Armley, Leeds? My gtgtgtgrandfather,
Joseph
Musgrave Whitaker, was baptized there in 1755. His father, James
Whitaker,
was a cloth merchant born in Colne, and his mother, Ann (Musgrave)
was
d/o
Joseph. I'm interested in what Armley is? part of city?
estate?
church?
nearby town?
