Hi Frank,
July (pronounced Julie) was the daughter of Harriet Caradine, a slave, and either Bird
Calhoun Caradine, her master, or Jack McBee a slave from a neighboring plantation. She
was born around 1860, and had a twin brother named Alfred. July married Arthur Calvert in
1878, and bore him one child, Levanner, in 1879. July died shortly after giving birth to
her child. As to her having native american ancestry. Anything is possible in that
since. This family is known for being extremely mixed and it is known that Harriet was at
the very least part white, and that Harriet's mother was born in Pennsylvania.
Harriet was born in Tennessee around 1824. Her parent plantation is not known, but I
suspect that it was a Barr Plantation. She came to Mississippi around 1841, where she
mothered her first daughter.
Jack McBee was born on the McBee Plantation in South Carolina. I do not have the details
of his origins on hand to review, but if my memory serves me correctly, he died around
1868, before the 1870 census but not before fathering a final child in 1867. Let me know
if i can be of further assistance.
