David,
I don't have a copy of the will of Anne Brent Calvert, but I got that information
about the will of the deceased wife of Leonard Calvert, from a book that I checked out of
the local library during the years of 1984-1987, and I am searching through my files to
find that information. I remember very vividly that it said the will of Anne Mynne
Calvert, deceased wife of Leonard Calvert, and listed the children and there was no
Margaret listed.
I am very suspicious that John Courts, the immigrant who came to Maryland in 1635 -
1645, could have been an imposter, and was in reality a servant in the Castle of Lochmaben
in Scotland or in the house at Caley Hill near Pool, England in Yorkshire. I strongly
think that John Courts could have taken the name of the people he worked for and came to
Maryland for a better future.
In looking over my genealogy notes on the Courts family, I have found that there is a
mention as Margaret, wife of John Courts, was an indentured servant of Barnaby Jackson,
and she was transported in 1659, servant, then I found a Mary Courts transported in the
year of 1661, then I found Margaret Calvert, daughter of Leonard Calvert and baptized in
1630, married in the year of 1654 John Courts.
This information was generated from the book, the Early Settlers of Maryland, by Gus
Skordes, who was the author of this book.
I agree with you that something is amiss here with the Robinson and Calvert and Courts
families. I have found on the Courts message board that someone put a message stating that
when the Jennings Hudnell Courts family went to England, they were the ones who found that
John Courts, the immigrant was baptized at Otley Parish Register and was married at Otley
Parish Register to Margaret Robinson, daughter of Anthony Robinson. And the message went
on and said that some member of the Courts family could have just claimed kinship to the
Calvert family and were not really related. I don't really know. It leads me to
wonder, if the Jennings Hudnell Courts family really found some material that they did not
like in England, so they invented this story and claimed kinship to another John Courts,
or maybe the John Courts, the immigrant was a servant to the John Courts of Otley Parish
Register and took the name of his master or boss when he was transported to Maryland,
thinking no !
one would ever know.
Good Luck,
kitty
