Message Board Post:
James H. 1819, brother of Alexander, was the one in the Mier Expedition. I have among our
family papers a letter James received years later on this subject:
"My Much Esteemed
Old Fellow Prisoner:
Be assured my old friend I am much pleased to hear from you. I have often enquired
of you. Awhile back I learned that you were not living and I feel cheered at the recpt.
of your letter which was a cheering evidence to me of the false report.
William H. Frensley is the [.] Bill that you knew in the chain gang in Perote Prison. He
was a member of my company and I knew him well, when he died, and the particulars of the
state of the act passed in 1870 [awarding] pensions to widows [not] as yet payed [sic].
[The remainder very difficult to decipher.]
Signed by Captain William Ryan, another who was lucky enough to have selected the white
bean while in Perote Prison and was allowed to live.
[A note on the document by R.C.B. 1934: "found it an "interesting
letter" to James H. Calvert, Robertson County."]
