This conversation is years old and it's likely none of the originators are following
it any longer, but I will add what I have to the discussion.
I am in possession (since 2010) of documents exchanged between members of my Calvert
family and other individuals during their lifetime. These documents were in the
possession of members of the family of Champe Carter, family attorney and business partner
and husband of Ruth Victoria Randolph and were donated to the Herzstein Museum in the San
Jacinto Monument sometime during the 1930s by a relative of Champe's. The Museum, at
my request, gave me copies of some 200 family documents. They are copies of documents
residing within boxes of Carter's office files from the period he was in Robertson
County, which include papers mentioning the names Robert Calvert, Edward Calvert,
Alexander Calvert and James H. Calvert and other business persons residing in Robertson
County during that period.
Among the papers is a letter to James H. (my GGGUncle) from Captain William Ryan in the
1870s. James had sent the Captain an inquiry he (James H) had received regarding William
Frensley, another Mier Expedition participant.
In the letter he tells James: "William H Frensley is the .....Bill that you knew in
the chain gang in Perote Prison. He was a member of my company and I knew him well, when
he died and the particulars of the state of the act passed in August 1870 [awarding]
pensions to widows as yet payed."
I've had difficulty deciphering much else in the letter
There is a note on the document by R. C. B. 1934 ? "Interesting Letter" to James
H. Calvert, Robertson County.
I believe this clarifies the identify of the James H. Calvert (1819-1884). Notes also
indicate he escaped in the mountains but was recaptured.
