Shortly after 1803 the land being the original Syms Eaton School was sold and the new
school was built in Hampton. The original school was on land that is now part of Langley
near Fox Hill.
I am researching a William Bennett, Master Mariner in the American Revolution who must
have been living near Fox Hill since he served on the "Liberty" under the
Barrons. His son, Littleton Bennett, signed a different petition in 1831 related to the
Syms School. Littleton was in the 1830 census of Elizabeth City and documented in 1834
documents related to his fathers award of bounty land and as having died before 1834 in
Elizabeth City.
Transcribing the Syms Eaton Petitions was a quest to try to figure out who
Littleton's mother might be. My best guess is Mary Hannah Dewberry (Dewbre). Names on
the petitions are not limited to heads of households as were the census records.
