Recently, we have received DNA related to Leonard Calvert b about 1675 in Ireland . his
father is suspected but not proven to be Leonard Calvert b 1635 at County Armagh . This
Leonard was not a Quaker but appears to be the brother of Thomas Calvert who married Jane
Glasford, son of John c 1580 who married Grace [--?--].
If Leonard Calvert is brother to Thomas Calvert 1617 I am wondering how Leonard would have
been born in 1635.
As I understand it Leonard Calvert b. ca 1618 Lygasary, Armagh, Ireland d. 1655 Lurgan,
Armagh married Anne Brent was the father of Leonard 1675. This is what I have for Leonard
the son of John Calvert ca 1580 & Grace, brother to Thomas b. 1617. Perhaps I got lost
somewhere or have incorrect information.

I can add a bit of information, vis a vis the Calvert Surname project at Familytreedna.
There are perhaps 100 participants in the Calvert surname project to date. The descendants
of John Calvert of Yorkshire, c 1580, have a succinct and matching DNA result at 37
markers -- enough to demonstrate with some granularity, that the participants share the
exact same common ancestor. The haplotype is I1a(Nordic) as opposed to the participants
who claim descent from George Calvert or other Calvert of the family line. The haplotype
for all of these is R1b1c. The descendants who claim descent from George do not match all
other claimants, for example, Benedict of Mt Airy. Nor can those descendants of George
share a common ancestor with the descendants of John.
We group the descendants of John via DNA comparison established through two descent lines
from John b 1648 at County Armagh: Joshua and John. descendants in these two lines match
at 37 markers within the descent and mismatch by as good as 1 marker between the two
descents -- they share the exact same ancestor.
The research problem was to bridge the primary source record gap from Thomas to either
John Calvert of Chester and Mifflin county, or my ancestor, Isaac of Chester to Greene
County.
By comparing to a completely separate line of Calverts, those descended from John Calvert
b 1689 d 1739 Orange Co, later Frederick VA, we demonstrate using DNA that descendants of
these two separate lines(sons of John 1648 who married Judith Stamper), share a common
ancestor.
Recently, we have received DNA related to Leonard Calvert b about 1675 in Ireland. his
father is suspected but not proven to be Leonard Calvert b 1635 at County Armagh. This
Leonard was not a Quaker but appears to be the brother of Thomas Calvert who married Jane
Glasford, son of John c 1580 who married Grace [--?--]. The DNA comparison of the
descendants of both Joshua Calvert b 1680 and John b 1689
match with the descendant from Leonard Calvert. This is the latest finding of research
with the DNA project.
We have yet to find a proven, primary source documented male Calvert of George
Calvert's descent, who is able to provide a DNA base for comparison. Since we have
multiple claimants from multiple lords Baltimore and since we have mismatching DNA among
the participants, we can only state thus far with a 98% confidence, that descendants from
George Calvert, b 1694 match with 37 markers. This means that the descendants of George
Calvert, said to have been born in MD in 1668 all match though we cannot prove that George
b 1694, or even his older brother John b 1692(both dates suspect) are sons of this George.
Recent evidence of the types of records in Stafford County, seem to indicate that there
are two George Calverts in Stafford County in the period of time 1690 - 1700. This is the
project we are working on.
John Baily Calvert Nicklin, wrote from his research that George (who appears first in
Stafford Court records in 1691) was formerly of Maryland. We find no record in Stafford
that identifies George in this manner. Currently we are going through all the court
records in order to find any indication in any record that George was indeed from
Maryland. Previously this year, we have gone through as much of the court records, Calvert
papers, the estate of William Calvert Esq, and so on, seeking any clues or proofs.
The court records in 1691-93 regarding land retained by George Calvert in Stafford, may be
the best clue as to whom he married, and why he retained a substantial piece of land
instead of the son of the original owner.
Best regards,
David Bell
