Jody,
I cannot answer your question regarding any descent from Alan or Walter Calvert(Calverly).
I do believe they are Calverly but there is no primary source evidence that any Calvert in
North America descends from either Gent. There are some intriguing possibilities which can
be traced to Calverly's who apparently changed their name to Calvert, this is in
Lancashire and so on.
If you descend from one of the Calverts, for example, George Calvert b 1668, I can tell
you that there is no evidence that this Gent ever lived in MD nor is there any evidence
that there was a son of William, Principal Secty MD, who drowned in 1682 in the Wicomico
River.
To find out where the research stands DNA-wise, you might address the Calvert surname
project at
Familytreedna.com. This project was formed in late 2003 and has more than 100
participants. We are seeking participants for further use of DNA as a tool to bypass
roadblocks related to primary source records.
At
Calvertgenealogy.net, you can find information about the various research which is
ongoing. The best traced family thus far is what is commonly known as the
"Quaker" or Nordic Calverts. They descend from John of Yorkshire, c 1580 who
married Grace and removed to County Armagh Ireland at least by 1617(so, perhaps we might
say, 1611-1617).
There are many different groupings of Calverts and as we have found, many spelling
derivations of the surname including Calvet(t) or Calvitt(likely all such are related to a
John Calvert, Huguenot of France who removed to Stafford, later PW Co VA and settled at
the James River Huguenot Settlement.
We have worked on groupings related to the Calverts of Botetourt and the South(Dewel
Lott's Our Calvert Kin's descendants and ancestors are of the Botetourt brothers,
James, William and Robert). Robert Calvert of Calvert Tx descends from William of TN and
AL who married Lucy Johnson.
Recent progress has been made on Christopher of Accomac(k), VA and Thomas of Plumtree
Island (Carolina). This may very well bring in the Colbert line of either William of
NC/SC/GA and/or James Logan. We are still working on this. The Coverts figure prominently
in research, much work tying them to MD and the question is, are they of the Saxon Barony,
or Calvert.
See the research and discussion group at yahoo groups. It relates the various work,
projects, and DNA:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Calvert_Genealogy. This group was formed to forward the
research in coordination with the DNA project mentioned above. At the group are several
files in the files section which may or may not be of some assistance.
best regards,
David Bell,
