QUINCY, Ill. -- Betty Jane Calvert, 79, of 6807 Horseshoe Valley Road, Quincy, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the North Adams Nursing Home, Mendon, Ill.
Services were at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Burial was at Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy.
Memorials may be made to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice or the Veterans of Foreign Wars Activity Fund at the Illinois Veterans Home.
Mrs. Calvert was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Muscatine, the daughter of James Ray and Lola Nickerson Church. She married Virgil L. Calvert Dec. 31, 1941, in Kahoka, Mo.
She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano and listening to gospel music. She loved to read, grow flowers, do crafts and crossword puzzles. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, devoted to her family.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Linda Schuette and husband Kent of Quincy, Bonnie Skaggs and husband Dave of Sarasota, Fla., Joni McGuffin and husband Glen and Diana Calvert, all of Mendon, and Cindy Brown and husband Richard of Schaumburg, Ill.; five sons, Virgil Calvert Jr. and wife Barbara of Pekin, Ill., Dennis Calvert and wife Connie and Jim Calvert and wife Vicki, all of Quincy, Brian Calvert of Independence, Mo., and John Calvert of Sarasota; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ramona McNealy of Las Vegas, Shirley Herlein and husband Bob, Yvonne Curry, Myrle Belknap and husband Chuck and Mary Roth, all of Muscatine; four brothers, David Church and wife Kay, Harry Church, Albert Church and wife Pat and Frank Church and wife Chris, all of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Lysle Calvert; a grandson, Gary Calvert; her stepmother, Evelyn Church; and two brothers, Jim Church and Kenneth Church.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Donald Raymond Calvert, 79, Muscatine, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Unity Hospital.
Services are at the Jeffrey S. Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, 114 W. Fourth St., Muscatine. According to his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded after the service. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are his grandsons. After the service, a luncheon will be served at the Musserville Methodist Hall.
Mr. Calvert was born May 25, 1924, in Muscatine, the son of Vincent and Hattie Mae McGowen Calvert. He married Shirley Anne Randall Dec. 22, 1945.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He played varsity football and participated in track at Muscatine High School and later attended the University of Iowa.
He was a federal postal worker for several years and worked for Pinkerton Security.
At age 61, he graduated from the Wendlestedt School for Professional Umpires in Florida and umpired baseball games until he was 75-years-old.
He was a long-time St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and country music.
He and his wife and Bill and Dodie Hoben co-founded the Muscatine County Parents of the Hearing Impaired Association.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Donald of Los Angeles, California, Gregory of Coralville, Daniel and wife, Lea, of Garner and Vincent and wife, Mary, of Horseshal, N.C.; son-in-law, Alan Showalter; five daughters, Cecelia Anderson of Waunakee, Wis., Miriam Novarro and husband, Joe, of West Palm Beach, Rosilind Calvert of New York, Shirley Miller and husband, Mike, of Muscatine and Jennifer Percell and husband, Keith, of Keokuk; 17 grandchildren, Anthony Zolnik, Marc and Cole Showalter, Scot Calvert, Aaron and Andrew Calvert, Nathaniel Percell, Andrea Coder, Kris McClintock, Abigail Calvert, Faith, Rachel and Sarah Calvert, Sally and Lilly Calvert, Nicole and Johanna Percell; a stepgranddaughter, Emily Kay Miller; three great-grandchildren, Brieana Coder, Hannah Rose and Simon Peter Dharma Showalter; three brothers, Virgil L. Calvert of Quincy, Ill., Ken Calvert and wife, Virginia, of Davenport and Cecil Calvert and wife, Maxine, of Muscatine; four sisters, Vivian Wund!
erlich of Iowa City, Dorothy Frans of Muscatine, Maxine Toussaint and husband, Stan, of Dallas, Texas, and Ruth Fitchner and husband, Paul, of Eliza, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Amelia Calvert of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
