CALVERT, MAUREEN " LOVE" whose handsome and elegant horse and wildlife sculptures for Hagen-Renaker pottery made her one of the most popular and prolific sculptors in America, passed away at her home of natural causes on March 31,2004. She was born in National city, Calif. in 1922 and attended high school there. At the age of 16 years she was awarded First Place in the national Strathmore Art Paper contest, and received numerous other awards before attending the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco on a scholarship. In 1951 she began working for John and Maxine Renaker as a decorator in their Monrovia pottery and quickly became one of their most important designers. She began sketching racehorses at Santa Anita Park in the 1950 ' s producing clay models for Hagen-Renaker including Man O ' War, Kelso, Terrang, Swaps, and Silky Sullivan. She eventually portrayed every breed of horse from Arabians to Mustangs, thrilling horse lovers for three generations. Love was al!
so superbly skilled at wildlife sculpture including shorebirds sketched near her home in Encinitas. Her wildlife sculptures were just as splendid as her horses and her pieces are prized by collectors all over the world. An only child, she made animals her best friends and was never without a flourishing garden and menagerie of birds, waterfowl, chickens, rabbits, tortoises and fish along with her beloved stray dogs and cats found on her early morning walks at Moonlight State Beach. Her garden at the corner of Florita and La Veta in old Encinitas is a tumbling, riotous fairyland of native trees, shrub and flowering plants filled with birdsong, butterflies, ponds and narrow dirt paths. Loved devoted her life to the study and protection of animals and plant she held so dear. She belonged to numerous conservation organizations and donated her time and talent to the protection of historic Cottonwood Creek near her home in Encinitas including art work for the entry sign. She spen!
t countless hours during the past 14 years removing non-native weeds f
rom Cottonwood Creek. She is survived by her husband P.G. "Whitey" Calvert ' s family including Marjorie and Paul Jones of Escondido, Calif. and step-granddaughter Linda Lyman of Stockton, Calif. Her family and friends ask that donations in Maureen ' s name be made to the Cottonwood Creek Conservancy in Encinitas for a "Love Cottonwoods" memorial grove to be established from cuttings taken from Love ' s own tree. Checks may be sent to the Cottonwood Creek Conservancy, C/O Brad Roth, 1507 Rubenstein, St. Cardiff, CA 92027. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com

I have connected a Calvert family to my Griffiths family.
Mary J Calvert married Elisah Griffiths in 1863 at Middlesbrough, Yorks. Her birth was registered in 1840 at Cargo Fleet, Middlesbrough, Yorks. Children of John and Jane Calvert baptised at Brompton By Northallerton, Yorkshire include:
1. Mary Jane 23 AUG 1840
2. John 14 OCT 1838
3. Isaac 02 MAY 1843
4. William 30 DEC 1835
5. Robert 21 SEP 1833.
Elisah’s first name is recorded with various spellings in the records. He was called ELISAH by my grandmother – his niece.
The 1861 census called him ELIZA (!), aged 24, born at Trevethion, Brecons and living with his parents and siblings at Kimberworth, Yorks.
ELIEZER Griffiths (father John Griffiths) married Mary Calvert (father John Calvert) in Middlesbrough, Yorks in 1863. He is named ELIZER on the Middlesbrough marriage index.
ELIGER Griffiths, a roll turner, and Mary Griffiths nee Calvert registered the birth of son Calvert at Middlesbrough, Yorks in 1868.
The 1881 census called him ELIGOR Griffiths, aged 44, born at Breckon, Brecknock, Wales and living at Middlesbrough, Yorks, with wife Mary, and children.
“Eliezer Griffiths Trevelyan, Commercial and Temperance Hotel, 52 Bridge street west” is listed in the Post Office, professions and trades for Middlesbrough in Bulmer's Directory of 1890.
The 1901 census called him ELIEGER Griffiths, aged 64, born at Breckon, Wales, living at Gt Ayton, Yorks with his wife and children.
I have not yet found his death record.
I would be happy to share information on the Griffiths family.
