Hi Folks:
For some time now, I've been trying to work out the relationship between
one of my ancestors, Col. Ninian Beall (Bell) of Maryland, and the
Calverts (Lords Baltimore etc.) who employed him as an Indian fighter
and military leader in the last half of the 17th century. Those of you
who have looked into Ninian's ancestry probably know he was born in
Lower Largo, Fife, Scotland in 1625, the eldest son of Dr. James Bell
and a mysterious woman named Anne Maria Calvert. Anne does not pop up in
any Scottish records I've been able to find so far. At first I suspected
she may have been born into the Calvert family in Yorkshire or
Northumberland -- an immigrant to Scotland. But then I started reading
about the Calverts and discovered there was at least one branch of the
family in Scotland that had been there for some time before Anne's
birth, circa 1600, though nobody seemed to have anything on the Scottish
Calverts. I went hunting on Origins and turned up the following Calverts
-- the earliest listed in the Scottish records, and all of them in Fife:
Calverts in Fife, Scotland
Georg Calvert - (born ca. 1615 died ?) married Barbara Walker ca. 1636.
His Wife: Barbara Walker (born ca 1620 died ?)
Their Children:
1. Son - James Calvert (christened Dec. 14, 1638
Anstruther Wester parish, died ?)
----------
Thomas Calvert (born ca. 1700 died ?) married Margaret Carmichael Nov.
28, 1728 St. Andrews & St. Leonards parish.
His Wife: Margaret Carmichael (born can 1705 died ?)
Their Children:
1. Son - Thomas Calvert (christened Sept. 21, 1729 St.
Andrews & St. Leonards parish died ?)
2. Daughter - Margaret Calvert (christened May 9, 1731
St. Andrews & St. Leonards parish died ?)
Alexander Calvert - (born ca. 1705 died ?) Married Margaret Hutcheon ca.
1729.
His wife: Margaret Hutcheon (born ca. 1710 died ?)
Their Children:
1. Son - William Calvert (christened Jan. 1, 1731 St.
Andrews & St. Leonards parish, died ?
-----
Anstruther Wester and St. Andrews are both within a few miles of Lower
Largo, so it makes sense to conclude that Anne Maria Calvert is from one
of these Calvert families. I also suspect that they retained their
Catholicism despite the Church of Scotland Reformation onslaught, which
began in 1559. That would explain why Anne is missing from the Church of
Scotland Old Parish Registers, along with most of her family. The above
list of Calverts are probably Church of Scotland Protestant converts.
All of this might also explain why Ninian was named after Scotland's
earliest Catholic saint rather than his grandfather, Alexander Bell, as
was the Scottish naming custom for eldest sons. A family falling out
over Anne's religion between James and his own father Alexander? Ninian
is the only one of thousands of Bell males born in Fife over the
centuries given that first name, at least from 1559 through to 1897.
I'm wondering if anybody else out there has looked into the Scottish
Calverts, their relationship to the Lords Baltimore, and to Col. Ninian
Beall. I'll take all the info I can get, with thanks.

HI George...
Good to hear from u 2 !
Can't wait to show this to "Cal" (Edward Calvert Jacobs)... I know he'll be
thrilled to find someone that can help confirm the info he's received. We're
having a tough time finding proof on some of his line, since one of his
paternals left his wife never to be seen or heard from again. But, I'm not
giving up on it, especially since the web is such a wonderful help. When I
get with him next I'll get back with u to let u know WHO this paternal was and
maybe someone out there on the Calvert List will be able to shed some light on
this part of his line.
Whenever u do find some time, please elaborate a bit more on your statement...
" It would be helpful if information proving the relationships was published.
"... Do u mean published as in sending this info to the Calvert List, or in
book format, or just on the web? Or....some other way?
Thanx bunches... :-)

Hi,
I have reseached the William Calvert family that was in Washington Co.,
TN from 1785 to 1820? No Jonathan appears in William's family or in any
of his male heirs. Also no Sarah Moon has turned up.

Hi everyone,
I have a question. Does anyone know why the Calverts in Mississippi would
want to change the spelling of their name to Calvit?
Is there anyone out there who has a connection between the Mississippi
Calverts (Calvits), Lord Baltimore Calverts, and the Rapides Parish,
Louisiana Calvits?

Hi George...
Though my line comes down through Benedict, I have found a 10th cousin once
removed here in Sarasota, but he's not online. We're lost on info for his
line & since I saw that u have Jesse listed in this em, I was wondering IF you
have any additonal info that we can add to prove his line. He's new to
genealogy & his 1st cousin was online until he retired last year, so I'm
trying to help them both get the proof we need.
At the bottom of this em is the info u sent regarding Harriet Calvert & just
below this paragraph is the info for Edward Calvert Jacobs here in Sarasota,
FL. I'm sure he'd appreciate any info u can add, no matter how little the
info may be. He's pretty excited about finding out his Calvert line.
I was in Brownsville, PA, in August hunting down my Cox line & Cal's Jacobs
line, but didn't find anything there. It's really a smalllllll town....
Thanx bunches...

<< Jerry,
Your inquiry about Harriett Calvert was forwarded
to me. Harriett Calvert descends from the
Calverts of Prince William co., Va., who in turn
by tradition are direct descendants of the 1st
Lord Baltimore through his son Leonard Calvert.
Leonard Calvert was the 1st Gov. of Maryland.
The lineage goes as follows Harriett, William,
Jesse, Jesse, Obed, George, George, William,
Leonard, George -who was the 1st Lord Baltimore.
There should be on-line information about the
family from George, the 1st Lord Baltimore
through Obed Calvert.
Obed's grandson Jesse married a first cousin
once displaced, Constant Calvert, so in
actuality there is second line descent, i.e.
Constant, William, George, George, William,
Leonard, George -who was the 1st Lord Baltimore.
This double lineage has caused confusion since
there were two Calvert grandfathers for the
children of Jesse and his wife Connie.
There are many pages of information about this
line of the Calvert family. It would be much
easier to scan the documents and send them as
attachments if you want further information.
please advise if you desire to do this.

There is evidence of the relationship of the Lord Baltimore line to, at
least, some of the Irish Calvert's. The first Lord Baltimore was given or
bought lands in Ireland, which is where his first peerage is base upon.
>From the book "George Calvert and Cecilius Calvert, Barons Baltimore of
Baltimore" by Wm. Hand Browne, Dodd, Mead and Company, New York, 1890. p3.
Age 14, "entered Trinity College, Oxford, as a commoner, and took his
bachelor's degree in 1597." "His college studies ended, he traveled on the
Continent, where it is probable that he made his first acquaintance of Sir
Robert Cecil, afterward his patron and the founder of his fortunes...."
p.4 "In 1605 Calvert received his master's degree at Oxford..."
p. 5 " Calvert was a member of two of these commissions [on Ireland and the
success of James I policy on conformity with religion and obedience to the
law of England] ....they dwell especially on the harmful influence of the
Jesuits; a point worth noting, as we shall se later that his son and
successor entertained a strong dislike and suspicion of that order."
pp 12-13. Browne lays the groundwork for Calvert's fall out of favor when
the King's marriage plans to the Spanish Infanta fell through and
Buckingham switched to promoting the French side-which Calvert strongly
opposed. "...Calvert wisely took the advantage of this transient gleam of
fair weather to steer the bark of his fortunes out of the perilous seas of
political life. He avowed to the king that he had become a convert to the
faith of Rome, and asked to be allowed to resign his secretary ship and
retire to private life." "His request was granted. Calvert, according to
the custom of the time, negotiated with Sir Albert Morton to vacate the
secretary ship in his favour for the sum of #L6,000. The king, whose old
affection for him had returned, retained him in the Privy Council,
notwithstanding his change of religion; and on February 16th, 1625, elevated
him to the Irish peerage as Baron Baltimore of Baltimore, in the County of
Longford." This is in Ireland!
p15
"As early as 1609 he had been a member of the second Virginia company [with
his friend Sir Robert Cecil] and was also one of the provisional council for
the management of the affairs of that colony after the revocation of the
charter [in 1623], and one of the eighteen councilors of the New England
Company in 1622."
1621. Feb. 18. The king granted him a manor of 2300 acres in county
Longford, Ireland. "These lands were held under the condition that all
settlers upon them should take the oath of supremacy and 'be coformable in
point of religion'; and when Calvert, four years later made profession of
the Roman Catholic faith, he surrendered his patent and received it back wit
the religious clause omitted. These Longford estates were then erected into
the manor of Baltimore, from which he took his baronial title." (William
Hand Browne's "George and Cecilius Calvert," p.11)
1625. Resigned as Principal Secretary of State, Feb 9. Feb. 16, created
Irish Peer with the title of Baron Baltimore, of Baltimore. (Note. No
county is named in the enrollment of the Baltimore Patent. There was not
and is not any place of that name in county Longford, which is the county
usually assigned to this creation, but the chartered town of Baltimore,
county Cork, the only place of that name in Ireland was then one of
considerable size.) (The Genealogical Peerage of the United Kingdom, Vol.
1,p.226.)

Sorry Kristine, I have not got very far back with my line of CALVERTs yet,
and no sign of a connection with Yorkshire yet.
My Grandfather was Patrick CALVERT b 1890 in Camus Strabane Northern
Ireland.
His father was Hugh CALVERT b 1854 in Camus Strabane, and his Father was
Hiram CALVERT who was known to have been in Strabane in 1845.
My Great Aunt Vera, who lived in Los Angeles, told me that her Grandfather
Hiram had been buried in Pensyllvannia.
My Great Uncle Joseph, used to play football (soccer) in Strabane, and on
one
occasion he was playing and was told that he had a relative of his playing
on
the opposing team. This man claimed to be Lord CALVERT. He said that there
definitely was a connection as ALL the Irish CALVERTS are from the same
family. The Baltimore CALVERTs (who founded Maryland had connections with
Ireland. Thus if what this person said is true, then we are related
somehow,
but there is no evidence yet.

Best of luck in your search, Jim.
