Hi! I found your entries on Chaplines and Calverts(connected) in
Ancestry.
I have been working on those families for at least 20 years - off and
on!
My wife's mother was Ruth Chapline Fouke before her marriage. Both the
Foukes and Chaplines lived in Shepherdstown, WV (then VA) from the
earliest
settlements in that part of VA. ie. William Chapline the 4th moved to
Terrepin's Neck on the Potomac just north of Shepherdstown. He both
worked
with and then later fought the Indians - getting scalped once!
William's
son Isaac's son Isaac is the father of Mahala Chapline who is my wife's
greatgrandmother.
I have pursued the Crosslands in Yorkshire as well as the Hawksworths
and
Conyers and Southworths etc. (back to the 1200s) back far enough to
realize
that their are thousands of interesting families! Most have been titled
at
one time or another.
I have met with Mrs. Swalm. (actually called "Petey" by her family!).
Shared material with the McDonnall family who descend from Abraham
Chapline
- member of Clarks and Rogers regimnets during the Rev. and member of
Congress from KY (land given for his service ) . Abraham was Isaac
Chapline's(son of William4th)brother from Shepherdstown. Petey, was 87
and
very sick but she insisted that we come to her home in the NC Mountains
and
study what she had on the Chaplines. I did learn a lot from her notes
and
etc. Unfortunately her heart failed withen a few month after and she
died. (her large genealogy and history materials are held by a neice)
The father of the Mayor of London (Edmond Chapline) was undoubtably the
brother of Isaac Chapline's father. Letters with local historians show
that they do not doubt this but the actual birth is missing ...so we
probably will have to settle on a "generic" Chapline from that period.
Petey , whilst studying in Essex and Cambridgeshire and York, found that
Isaac's grandfather(most likely grandfather in my book!) was the last
Chapline to live in "Spain's Hall" which was built just before the
Norman
invasion by the D'espaigne family (Normans also!). D'espaigne served
William and received title to what became "Spain's Hall" The Kemp family
controlled the Hall in the 1400-1500s - a Chapline was a cousin of Sir
William Kemp who was the last to serve there. The Chaplines probably
lived
there in the 1560s and it is quite possible that Isaac Chapline was born
there. That he married a Calvert is not too odd, as both families held
title to lands in Yorkshire and the London area and had about the level
of
"nobility" over the preceeding 500 years!
My wife and I visited with the present owner (Sir John Ruggles-Brise)
quite by accident while we were studying the outside of Spains' Hall!
He
emerged and struck up a conversation! We explained the situation and he
took us over to the ancient "front" window and there were the arms of
the
Despaignes, Kemps and one variety of the Chapline arms plus several
neither
he nor I had ever known. The Chapline arms were quartered with Kemp and
two others?! Sir John then proceeded to tell us that he once had a
chance
to get married when an American service woman (Marine!) visited his home
saying that she was related to one of the former owners- Chapline. They
got along famously until she visited the Hall and asked to use the
bathroom. He said that the (very large) Hall had not yet been updated
to
bathrooms and he was sorry. Her ardor seemed to quail and she never
came
back!! The "Marine" was PETEY!! She had served as the unofficial
mascot
of the Marine Corps during WW2 and was given a medal and other
recognitions
by the Corps. She had a radio program where she talked with young
Marines
who were lonely and confused, etc.(Detroit I believe)
and eventually she was allowed to wear a uniform and attend rallys etc.
When she went to England in the early seventies, she had just divorced
Mr.
Swalm and relates this incident in her diary - but in a different way
than
Sir John did to us!! So, we both hit the Chapline "hot spots", there ,
and
in Yorkshire and in Lincolnshire- where a Chaplin was listed as a
merchant
in the 1100s. Chaplines (Mythology +some facts) presumedly came to
England
as the "keepers of the cape" with William the Conq.
Chaplines in France had traditionally held the box with the remnant of
the
Cape of St. Martin (a Roman officer who sheared his cape in two on a
very
cold
night as he rode in the French town with a Roman fort -about 470 AD )
Martin had a dream that Jesus visited and praised him for his selfless
act.
3 Centuries later, the Popes who then were in France made Martin a
Saint
and the family who held the remnant -in waiting- those three centuries,
became the "Chaplines" (capeholders). They came with William theConq. in
1088 and were one of the first English families to take on a name -the
name
they always had! When we were in Lons-Le -Saunier (Eastern France) we
went
to a town nearby looking for evidence remaining of my Huguenot family
who
left
fo England and then SC in the US - Bonneaus. We found the home they
built
in 1470s occupied with descendants of the Bonneaus. They insisted that
we
see their church which they said was the original site of a Roman temple
and later the church which has been repaired and enlarged, etc. So, we
did. The church was moorish in design and very very old. However, on
the
wall behind the font was a picture... of St. Martin sharing his cape
with
an old man!! The docent explained that the ancestral holders of the
cape
were from this parish and thats why they feature him in their church!
So
.since there never have been more that a dozen houses or so attending
that
church my chance of relating to my wife's Chaplines would seem pretty
good!
Genealogy is full of coincidence it seems.
Questions or ways that I might help you guys? I need more information
about the Chaplines of the 1800 to 1820 period in Shepherdstown - but
you
may not descend from that linel!
Thanks for putting up with my ramblings - or at least getting this far!

Julie, forgive my butting in. You probably still want a copy of the
death certificate, but if you want the date & place of death, you can
check at the LDS local library as they have death records on CD. I found
so many dates that I didn't know, even found where they died as you
check by name. I've forgotten how far they go back.

John Madron Calvert is found on pg. 155 of O'Gorman's book. I sent the
information to Julie with the suggestion that she get a copy of her
grandfather's (Charles Leonard Calvert b. 1901,d. 1931) death
certificate for more details. Telling her that if the informant knew
anything abt. him or his parents it would be on the document. This is an
example of the new material that could be added to O'Gorman's work,
since Julie's line dead ends on pg. 155. Regards, Vicki K

Vicky,
Thank you for your quick response and sorry for the confusion! I'll try
to
be a little clearer. Don't quite know the genealogy lingo yet. Please
bear
with me.
My line is as follows:
James Madron Calvert--->
John Wilson Calvert (Was in the Confederate Army, was nicknamed "Old
Soldier", had his left
Leg amputated Nov. 1, 1864 at the C.S.A. General Hospital in
Charlottesville, Va.)
He and his wife Sara Hill McIlwain had one child, William Archer
Calvert.
William Archer Calvert b. 11-3-1867, d. 1-15-1926, m.
Mary
Estelle Botts
On 1-28-1888. They had eight children of which one, I am 99% sure was
my
grandfather, Charles Leonard Calvert. I have the names of five from a
book
that may be entitled "Greenwood County Sketches." All I have is one
page
copied from the book. The copy was sent to my father by a woman he had
hired in Abbeville to look up info for him in Vital Records, and etc.
Their
names follow:
1. Lucy Calvert m. J.A. Ramey
2. John Calvert m. Harriett Coan
3. Sarah Calvert m. Arthur Ellis (Dad used to call her Aunt Sarah, and I
remember from childhood visiting her in New Orleans in 1969).
4. Ruth Calvert m. Frank Sherard
5. Gertrude Calvert m. Mark Hagan
Those are the only names listed in the book, but after talking to my Dad
last night, he said his father, Charles, and one other brother named
William and another sister, name forgotten, should be listed as well.
Dad
says that William died sometime in the 60's. I will do my homework,
though
and order a death certificate to make sure. It gets a little muddy
asking
my Dad the questions, because Charles' death was by murder. He was
murdered by his brother, and I am not sure which one. The sensitivity
is
compounded by the fact that his mother, Azilee, was also a murder victim
in
a murder-suicide by her second husband. Nice, huh? Talk about
skeletons
in the closet :).
To finish the line, though: Charles L. Calvert, b. 1901, d. Dec. 26,
1930, m. Azilee McKnight
Two children: 1. Charles L. Calvert II,
b.
5-25-28
2. William McKnight Calvert b. 11-19-30
(My Dad!!)
I was afraid the O'Gorman book would not be of much help to me. But I
should find my answer easily from the death certificate. Thank you and
I
will let you know what I find out.

Here is what little information I have concerning William Calvert and
Elizabeth Nodding.
William Calvert, b. Feb. 26, 1757 married Elizabeth Nodding on July 18, 1780.
their Children:
John Calvert b. Oct 19, 1781. m. Dorcas Collyer.
William Calvert b. Dec. 25, 1783 m. Elizabeth Fine
Nancy Calvert b. Mar. 9, 1786 d. May 1, 1786
Leonard calvert b. May 23, 1787; m. Mary (Polly) Bowman
Sarah Calvert b. June 3, 1789
Mary b. Feb 19, 1792; m. Thomas Finch
Alice b. Feb 3, 1794
Elizabeth b. Apr. 14, 1796; m. Lewis Broyles
Nodding Calvert b. Sept 1, 1798 m. Jane Morley
Jabez Calvert b. Aug 25, 1805 m. Malinda (prob. Hawkins)
I believe that I am descended from one of these Calverts. Possibly William
Calvert and Elizabeth Fine. I will contact my relatives in MO to check. I
was mistaken as to the name of my grandfather. My fathers name was John
Anderson Calvert b. April 10, 1919. He was the son of John Arnold Calvert b.
June 24, 1870 and Nellie Mae Anderson. My dad had 4 sisters:
Alma Calvert Butcher
Corda Calvert Craig
Dorothy Calvert Raines
Georgetta Calvert Rippley
I do have more info on the descendants of the above Calverts (William and
Elizabeth)
if anyone needs it. I received it from my aunts who got it from a Harold
Calvert in Carrollton, MO . I don't know what connection he has to my family
if any.
Cathy
Hmmm wonder if they tie into a cousin line we have on CALVERT in Green
Ridge. What follows is what we have:
Charles L. Calvert, of Green Ridge township, is one of the successful
farmers and stockman of Pettis County, and is a descendent of a pioneer
family of this State. Mr.Calvert was born in Cooper County, Missouri,
October 21, 1853, a son of Elias and Kisiah (Hughes) Calvert, both natives
of Tennessee, who with their parents were early settlers in Cooper County,
Missouri. In 1860, Elias Calvert and family came to Pettis County, and
settled on a farm at Elk Fork township. This was an unbroken section of the
country at that early date, and Mr. Calvert broke the primitive prairie
with ox teams and improved a farm in that township, and met with a
reasonable degree of success in his undertakings. He was industrious, a
good citizen, and a Christian man. He was one of the organizers and charter
members of the Baptist Church of Green Ridge. He and his wife died of
lagrippe in 1890, their deaths occurring within two days of each other.
They were each seventy-four years of age. Elias and Kisiah (Hughes) Calvert
were the parents of the following children: Mary, married Sam rains, and
they reside at Twin Falls, Idaho; Ellen, married Matthew Rains,Kansas City,
Missouri; James M., Craig, Missouri; Charles L., The subject of this
sketch; Henry, Nevada, Missouri.
Charles L. Calvert was about seven years of age when he came to Pettis
County with his parents. He was reared and educated in this county and
remained at home with his parents until 1882. He has always followed
farming, and in 1882 purchased his present place, in Green Ridge township.
He made many improvements, and now owns a well-cultivated. fine-appearing
and fertile farm of 130 acres. He carries on general farming and stock
raising, and gives special attention to raising high-grade Duroc Jersey
hogs. He is justly regarded as one of the successful and up-to-date
agriculturists of Pettis County. He has set out a number of trees on his
place which, together with the splendid farm buildings, give the place an
imposing appearance.
Mr. Calvert was united in marriage February 10, 1881, with Miss Ella J.
Weeden, a native of Maniteau County, Missouri, and a daughter of Caleb and
Amanda (Wilkerson) Weeden, the former a native of Tennessee and the latter
of Illinois. They settled in Pettis county in 1866. To Mr. and Mrs. Calvert
have been born seven children, as follow: LeRoy, resides in Green Ridge
township; Oliver C., East Sedalia, Missouri; Nellie M., married L. Ream,
Green Ridge, Missouri; Gertrude, married Forrest Helman; Marie, deceased;
Forrest L., and Robert Carl, at home.
Mr. Calvert is a Democrat, and he takes commendable interest in public and
political affairs, but has never sought office. He is a member of the
Baptist Church, of which he is a deacon, and his fraternal affiliations are
with the Independent Order of Odd Follows and the Modern Woodsman of America.

Does anyone know if any of those 8 children settled in Greenridge MO. My
fathers name was John Calvert, his father was George. Thats about all I know
right now.
Re question on Benedict Swingate Calvert and Henry. Charles Calvert 5th
Lord Baltimore had a legitimate son, Frederick. 6th Lord Baltimore.
Frederick had an illigitimata son, Henry Hartford (1760-1835) who W:lS
Proprietor of MD. 1771-76. That's the nearest I can get to a Henry.
I do have info. on the Porter, Jones, Hewit conneeted to Charles Calvert,
He m. Sarah Howson and #2 Barbara Kirk.

A chip off the old block often destroys the symmetry of the family tree.--
Source unknown.
In the new movie Titanic the surname of Calvert was mentioned. Was this
a reference to a real person or not?
My mother (92) said when the Titanic sank, there was a book published on
it and her parents went right out and bought a copy. Her mother's
maiden name was Patti Calvert. Just wondered if anyone knows of a
passenger list and if this indeed is of any value? Thanks.

Hi Everybody,
I found this HARRISON website last night and it has CALVERT's too -
Thought I would share the address, although many of you probably have the data
already.
http://www.ouhsc.edu/~rbonner/harrison/d0071/g0000085.html#I482
This takes you directly to Benjamin Harrison and Elizabeth Burwell, listed as
parents of Elizabeth Harrison, the wife of John Calvert (1692 - 1739).

I agree. Why don't we do it on the Web. I have a few suggestions.
1. The best way would be for someone to volunteer to host a site and
then the rest of us could contribute info, updates, corrections, etc.
2. Another possibility is to place portions at various sites and then
link them all together. I have already input into my own computer file
most of O'Gorman's chapter on my line [William and Elizabeth Nodding,
Book XII]. It wouldn't take much to upload it to a Web site. [I've been
trying to get it ready to do that for a while anyway, but something else
seems to intervene.]
3. We could each find some place to post our own notes, updates, etc.
and then hopefully a searcher could find what they were seeking.
If the information is centralized on a single site, then complete
electronic indexing and searching is available quite easily. Obviously,
for that reason, I prefer suggestion #1. Unfortunately, I am unable to
take on that responsibility, (because of extensive involvment in the
USGenWeb Project), but I would volunteer to coordinate and update "Book
XII" of O'Gorman. We only need 16 or so more volunteers.

Thanks so much for your info. I am really confused about this line.
The
reason I tracked this one down was by obtaining death cert. of Margaret
WARD
CALVERT. It lists her father as James WARD (which is what I had) but
then
lists her mother as Sucky DADISMAN. I had James WARD (father of George
H.,
Margaret, Fielding & Samuel) listed as husband of Susan MOORE (per
census
records and marriage records) But I know that this is the correct
Margaret
WARD because Aunt Emily (who is still alive at 85) remembers going to
her Aunt
Meg Calvert's house somewhere near Chaplin and that she had a son named
Bobby
Lee Calvert. R.L. Calvert was the informant on the death cert. so I am
assuming this is Robert Lee. Death Cert. lists her as Margaret Jane
Calvert
(as does her tombstone) birthdate on cert. is 12/2/1831 and death date
was
6/5/1920 cause of death is "Burned". Do you know anything about that?
If
you know of anyone who comes directly out of this line who may have done
more
research on the WARD line, I would love to get in touch with them to see
if
they by any chance know anything about the MOORE/DADISMAN difference in
mother's names. I am wondering if Susan Moore was on her second
marriage and
was originally a Dadisman or if Bobby Lee thought that her name was
Dadisman,
or if perhaps Susan died and James remarried a Dadisman and Bobby Lee
then
thought that this was his grandmother. Really need to solve this
puzzle. Any
help will be greatly appreciated. And thank you again for your help so
far.
