*4* In view of the fact that several of the American Calverts have not been
identified, some trouble has been taken to place John Calvert of St.
Andrews Holborn, London, gent., who is named as a trustee by Catherine
Eure. The John Calvert of Cecilius Calvert's will is presumably the same
man of business. The acquaintance between the Arundells and the Lancashire
Calverts perhaps had its beginings in Ann Philipson's Westmoreland and
Lancashire background and there may be, moreover, some hidden tie of blood
to account for it. They were neighboring county families of similar fortune
and education, some Catholic and some Protestant.
Lodge's Peerage of Ireland, 1754 Edition, Vol.IV, p. 135, says that John
Calvert succeeded his father Cecilius as Lord Baltimore but d. in 1689,
s.p. This mistake has been followed by several historians. It seems quite
clear, however, with the wills at hand, that the John Calvert mentioned by
Cecilius, Lord Baltimore, was mistaken for a son for some reason,
particularly as the date of death given by Lodge precisely coincides with
that of John Calvert of Lancashire and London, whose will appears above and
who was almost certainly the John mentioned in Lord Baltimore's will, ante.
John Calvert of St. Andrews Holborn, London, was, as Catherine Eure
explained, the son of Thomas Calvert of Cockerham, Lancashire. He was bapt.
8 June, 1609 (Reg. of Cockerham Parish, p. 24) and m. Elizabeth, dau. of
Robert Middleton of Thurnham, Cockerham Parish, Lanc., and wid. of Col.
Thomas Dalton of Thurnham, who d. 2 Nov.,1644, of wounds received at the
second Battle of Newbury. Col. Thomas and Elizabeth Dalton of Thurnham had
: Robert (1639-1700), wjo m. and had issue; Thomas, Margaret, Elizabeth,
Ann, Jane, Helen, Dorothy, Catherine, and Elinor, all of whom were listed
as recusants in 1640, when their property was sequestered. The "son-in-law"
George Middleton, mentioned in John Calvert's will, may have been the
husband of one of his two surviving stepdaughters, Helen and Elizabeth
Dalton. Elizabeth Middleton (Dalton) Calvert's sister Joane m., first, Col.
Francis Hungate and , second, W,. Hammond. Sir Thos. Sclater, Bart.
(1615-1684), mentions his cousin John Calvert in his will (Misc. Gen. et
Herald., new series, Vol. I, p. 382) and Sir John Otway seems to have been
related to both (Victoria Lancashire, Vol. VIII, p. 103; Dugdale, V. of
Lancashire, 94, 198; Foster, Yorkshire Pedigrees, Vol. I, Hungate Chart;
Ormerod, Cheshire, Vol. III, pp. 58, 60, etc.; Cal of Com. for Compounding,
p. 2559; Rec. Soc. of Lanc. and Cheshire, Royalist Composition Papers, Vol.
26, pp. 109,105, etc, Vol. 36, p. 137; Burke, Commoners, Vol.I, p. 533;
Trans. Hist. Soc. Lanc. and Ches.,Vol. 42, pp. 99-124).

The Will of THOMAS, Lord ARUNDELL (2)of Wardour
(2) When Cecilius Calvert married Anne, dau. of Thomas, Baron Arundell of
Wardour Castle, Tisbury parish, Wiltshire, he allied himself with one of
the greatest houses in England, staunchly Catholic always. Anne's
grandfather was Sir Matthew Arundell
(a friend of Sir Robert Cecil, George Calvert's patron) and his wife
Margaret, dau. of Sir Henry Willoughby of Wollaton, Nottinghamshire. Anne's
great-grandfather was Sir Thomas Arundell, who was beheaded on Tower Hill
in 1552, and whose wife was Margaret Howard, sist. of Queen Catherine
Howard. The Dict. of Net. Biog. describes the many historical personages in
Anne Arundell's family background, from which it is safe to suppose many of
Maryland's early settlers came.
Thomas, Lord Arundell (1560-1639), m., first, Mary Wriothesley (dau. of
Henry, Earl of Southampton), by whom he had: (1) Thomas, Baron Arundell of
Wardour (1586-1643), who by his wife Blanche Somerset, dau. of the Earl of
Worcester, had Henry, Baron Arundell, Katherine Arundell, who m. Francis
Cornwallis (son of Sir Charles, Knt.), and Anne Arundell, who m. Roger
Vaughan of Salisbury; (2)William, who m. Hon. Mary Browne, dau. of Anthony,
Viscount Montagur, and wid. of Wm. Pawlett, Viscount St. John, s. of Wm.,
Marquess of Winchester, by whom he had Charles Arundell ( who m.
MaryTalbot, dau. of the 10th Earl of Shrewsbury), Mary Arundell, who m. Sir
henry Tichbourne, and Katherine Arundell; (3) Elizabeth Mary, who m., circa
1606, Sir John Philpot of Compton, by whom she had issue' Sir John , after
her death, Mary, dau. of W,. Dunch of Avebury, Wilts, wid. of Edward
Swaine.
Thomas, Lord Arundell, m., second, 1 July, 1608 ( Reg. of St. Andrews
Holborn, London), Anne, dau. of Miles Philipson of Crook, Westmoreland (and
his w. Varvara Sandys of Conishead, Lancashire, a kinswoman of the
Archbishop), by whom he had: (1) Matthew (1609-1620); (2) Thomas; (3)
Frederick (all dead in their minority); (4) Catherine, who m. Ralp Eure
and of whom later;(5) Mary, who m. Sir John Somerset, s. of Henry, Earl of
Worcester, and his wife, Anne Russel, by whom she had Thomas Somerset (
-1671), Charles (1644- ), ( who m. successively Jane Thomas, Catherine
Baskerville and Elizabeth Goodyer, by one of whom he had Maria Johanna
Somerset, who is said in the Md. Hist. Mag.,Vol. IIp. 374, to have m.
Richard Smith of Md.), and Henry, who m. Ann, dau. of Walter, Lord Aston of
Forfar, by whom he had Edward Maria Somerset, husband successively of Jane
and Anne Calvert, daus. of Charles Calvert, third Lord Baltimore ( Surtees,
Durham, Vol. IV,p. 33). Somerset County, Maryland, was named for Mary, Lady
Somerset, sister of Anne Arundell, Lady Baltimore, and it is not impossible
that Talbot County ws named for another sister, Frances, Lady Talbot,
rather than for the Proprietary's sister, Lady Grace Talbot of Ireland. In
the absence of any evidence, it is somewhat difficult to say authoritively
which of his four groups of Talbot connections Cecilius, Lord Baltimore,
wished to honor. Indeed, it may have been a gesture to them all; (6) Anne
Arundell, who m. Cecilius Calvert, Lord Baltimore; (7) Frances Arundell,
who m. John Talbot, 10th Earl of Shrewsbury, as his second wife (settlement
28 Feb.,1637/8. Calvert Papers, No. 44, Md. Hist.soc. Mss. Coll.), by whom
she had Thomas Talbot of Longford, Shropshire( who m. Ann, dau. of Sir John
Yate of Buchland, Berks. Thomas and Ann Talbot's son John m. Catherine
Belasyse and d.s.p.), John Talbot, who d. young, Col. Bruno Talbot,
Chancellor of the Exchecquer in Ireland, and Anna Maria Talbot, who d. at
Pontoise in France, 13 Feb., 1692/3, a Benedictine nun. John Talbot, 10th
Earl of Shrewsbury, had m. previously Mary Fortescue (dau. of Sir Francis
of Salden House, Murseley parish, Bucks, and aunt of Sir John Fortescue,
who m. Margaret Arundell), by whom he has had many descendants, one of whom
apparently was that Ann Talbot, niece and ward of Gilbert, Earl of
Shrewsbury, who m., 1725, Henry Darnall of Maryland (Richardson, Side
Lights, Vol. II, p. 77; Catholic Rec. Soc. Pub., Vol. X, p. 228; Lodge,
Peerage of Ireland, Vol. I, p. 143; Luttrell, Brief Relation, Vol.II, p.
231; Vol III, p. 232; Collins, Peerage, Vol. III, p. 38, Vol. VI, p. 33;
Vol. VII, pp. 40 seq.; Edmonson, Baronogium Genealogicum, Vol.II, p. 85);
(8) Margaret Holborn, d. Dec. , 1638), who m. after Lord Arundell's house,
Castle Yard, 28 June, 1637, Sir John Fortescue, Bart., of Salden House,
Murseley parish, Bucks, s. of Sir John Fortescue, Bart. and Frances, day.
of Sir Edward Stanley, K.B., by whom she had Frances Firtescue, who m., 18
May, 1652, Henry Benedict Hall of High Meadow, Glowucestershire, and
Elizabeth Fortescue, who m. Brome Whorwood of Sandwell Hall, Staffordshire.
Sir John Fortescue (1614-1683) m., second, Mary, dau. of Sir Wm. Stoner,
Oxon, and, third, Elizabeth, dau. of Sir John Wintour of Lydney,
Gloucestershire( Family of Fortescue, p. 420, ect.); (9) Clara, twin of
Margaret, who m. (setlement 7 July, 1638) Humphrey,s. of John Weld and
Frances Whitmore, by whom she had Mary Wrod ( -1688), who m. Nicholas
Taaffe, Earl of Carringford in the Irish Peerage (Archdall, Lodge's Peerage
of Ireland, Vol. IV, p. 296; Gibbs, Peerage). The Weld family is important
in the history of the Catholic Church in England. Humphrey Weld above
bought Lulworth Castle in Dorset in 1641. It ws in the chapel of the Castle
that Archbishop Carroll from Maryland was consecrated, more than a century
later. When St. Omers, the English Jesuit College in France, was dissolved,
the Weld family gave beautiful Stonyhurst in Lancashire to be used as a
Jesuit College and there it flourishes to this day (Catholic Hist. Review,
Vol. I, p. 245; Hutchins, Dorset, Vol. I p. 226; Clutterbuck, Herts, Vol.
II, p. 358; Lawson, Roman Catholic Families of England, Arundell volume,
passiml Burke, Extinct Baronetcies; Burke, Peerage, current editions, for
Arundell; Gibbs, Peerage, for Baltimore and Arundell; Catholic
Encyclopedia, pass'm).
Castle, Wiltshire, dated 5 Nov., 1639. ( Abstract from Howard, Roman
Catholic Families of England, Vol. III, p. 196).
To be buried in the same manner as my father, Sir MATTHEW ARUNDELL was,
without any vain ostentation. My friend WM. PEASELEY of London, Esq. and
JOHN MORGAN of Holborn, Middlesex, gent, executors. Witnesses, GEO. BARBER,

>Back at you Vicki, I didn't know there was a Calvert list, guess I will
have to check it. Hope this computer can hold all this that I am finding.
I will dig through what I have on my Calverts and check with my aunt, who
has done most of the Calvert research--I know I descend from a Keziah
Calvert, daughter of Elijah and Charity Calvert who came to Franklin Co.,
Ky. from Mason Co. and had been in Ky. since 1792. Keziah was born in
Prince William Co., Va. about 1784 and died after 1860 in Owen County, Ky.
Does anything sound familiar?
