Has any one been able to trace their ancestor back to arriving in America on the ship
“John” about 1816? My gr gr gr gr grandmother along with her mother were sailing to
America when those that took ill were given some “meds” to help them go ahead and die so
that the rest of those on board would make it safely to shore as the sharks were trying to
turn the boat over, according to my grandfather’s history. The mother died and was thrown
overboard and the daughter made it to shore. Julia was about 12 yrs old when this came
about. I have no idea as to father was or even what her mother’s name was. All I know
is that Julia named a son, Peter CALMUS Campbell and that is why I feel her maiden name
was Calmes. Our way of saying the name as to how folks thought the American way of
spelling it could be the difference that we can see in writing. Julia according to census
records was from France/Switzerland, depending on the census yr you search. Any thoughts
or help with this would be greatly appreciated. Julia married the first time and had
children in Maryland about 1822. Thank you, Carolyn
