Acording to available records, there were two Marcus (correct spelling) Calmes. born in
Kentucky in or about 1844.
The first Marcus was the son of William Thomas and Lucinda Smith Calmes, born in May
1844, in Fayette County, Ky. He subsequently married Nannie T. Craddock, daughter of
Judge George W. and Harriet Theobald Craddock, on 7 Nov 1866, in Franklin County, KY.
They later had Jesse M. Calmes, born about 1868 in Frankfort, Franklin County. I have no
additional info on Jesse. This Marcus reportedly died about 1907 in Harriman, Roane
County, Tenn., and was subsequently buried next to his wife, Nannie, who died in 1898, in
the Frankfort Cemetery, Section H, Lot 310, Grave #7.
The other Marcus Calmes, was also born in Kentucky (probably) in Fayette County, about
1844, He apparently made his way to Texas where during the Civil War he served as a
private in Company A of Wells Battalion Texas Cavalry and Company I of the 15th Texas
Infantry. After the war, he moved to California. He married Unknown Barnes, of
Corcoran, Kings County, and they had a son, La Rue Sydney Calmes, born 4 Feb 1873, in
Corcoran, Kings County, who married Lilli May Gardner, on10 Aug 1902, In Anaheim, Orange
County and had issue: La Rue Berkely Calmes, born 20 July 1903. The date of death and
location of burial of this Marcus Calmes is unknown.
