Here is some of my Tate info, let me know if you see any connection, this John M Tate is
my gr, gr, gr grandfather, they lived in Greenville, SC:

• John M. Tate (M stands for Madison probably) b-c.1794 d-c.1865
• Married to Cynthia Cannon b-c:1794 d.July 26, 1857
• Cynthia Cannon buried at Reedy River Baptist Church in Greenville, SC.
• Cynthia is listed in the Reedy River Baptist Church minutes.
• John had a brother named Sam Tate who owned some marble mines in Georgia. Sam had big
house made out of pink marble, which is now a restaurant. The town of Tate, GA is named
after Sam Tate. (1)

William Franklin Tate served in the CSA 3rd South Carolina Reserves Co. F (90 days,
1862-3) as a Private.
William F Tate was married to Mary Brown (b.July 31, 1821 d.September 24, 1901)
William and Mary had a child named Mary Ida Tate (b.May 8, 1867 d.May 29, 1916), Mary Ida
Tate married John Oscar Few (b.1869 d.1920) Married on January 4, 1891.

Larkin Cannon Tate is listed on John M. Tate’s will.
Larkin Cannon Tate served in the CSA 1st SC State Troops Co. H (6 months 1863-4) as a
private in the infantry.
Larkin enlisted in Greenville, SC on August 1st, 1863.

John Henry Tate served in the CSA 1st SC Artillery Co. I as a private. He enlisted on
April 12 1862 in Greenville, SC.

Malinda is listed on the 1850 Census as being 27 years old.
• Thomas Madison Tate b-c.1825
Thomas Madison is listed on John M. Tate’s will.
Thomas is listed on the 1850 Census as being 26 years old.

• Willis G. Tate b-c.1828 d. March 21, 1864
Willis G. Tate served in the CSA 16th SC Regiment Co. C Croft’s Mountian Rangers.
Willis died in Dalton, GA per 16th SC Regiment book by John S. Taylor.
Willis is buried at the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, Marietta, Georgia.
Willis a brother of Spartan was killed in GA during the Civil War. (4)
• Alfred M.(probably Madison) Tate b.April 8, 1832 d.November 6, 1904
Alfred M. Tate served in the CSA 16th SC Regiment Co. C Croft’s Mountian Rangers.
Alfred is buried at Reedy River Baptist Church in Greenville, SC.
From the South Carolina Baptist Deaths and Marriages, 1866-87: “On Sunday morning,
October 10th 1880, at the residence of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Alfred Tate, by John J.
Watson, Esq., Mr. Moses Goodlet and Miss Elvira Benson, all of Greenville County, SC.”
• Alfred M. Tate is buried at Reedy River Baptist Church. Alfred’s dates on his tombstone
read Born: April 8, 1832 Died: November 6, 1904. Alfred has a CSA tombstone which reads:
A.M. Tate Co. C 116th SC Reg. Inf. CSA (this should read the 16th Regiment and not the
116th). His name is spelled Alford on the tombstone but I think it should
read Alfred not Alford.

Elizabeth Tate is listed on John M. Tate’s will.
Elizabeth is listed in the Reedy River Baptist Church minutes as dying in 1900.
• Andrew Jackson Tate b-c.1835 d.?
Andrew Jackson Tate served in the CSA 1st SC Artillery Co. I as a private. He enlisted on
April 12 1862 (the same day as John Henry Tate) in Greenville, SC.
• Ruth Tate b-c.1837 d.1900
Ruth Tate is listed on John M. Tate’s will (name appears as Ruthy on the will).
Ruth Tate is listed in the Reedy River Baptist Church minutes as dying in 1900.
• Spartan G. Tate b.May 2,1838 d.January 17, 1910
Married to Mary Nancy Ward (may be Nancy Mary Ward) b.April 23, 1842 d.December 16, 1896.
Spartan and Mary are buried at the Berea Baptist Church in Greenville, SC.
Spartan and Mary are listed in the 1860 Census with a son named John who was 8 months old
at the time, he must have died young?
Spartan enlisted in the Confederate Army on December 12, 1861.
He served in the 16th South Carolina Regiment Company C as a private.
*There is an Eliza Tate listed on the 1860 Census as being 20 years old, under
John M. Tate.
