I too am a descendant of Johanna Baker Hurst and got the information about Mourning Dove
Calloway from someone (undocumented) years ago. I've never found any proof. Have
you?
I recently saw the name Callaway as a maiden name for Nancy married to John Hurst
(Squire's father). I wrote to several with that name in their tree and no one seemed
to know where it came from (just got it from other's trees on line).
Squire's brother, Elijah b. 1785, had a daughter, Sarah Ann Hurst b. 1817, who married
a John F. Callaway and had children named Marshall Callaway and Sanders Callaway. Sarah
Ann could have named children after her uncles' children but it is impossible (time
wise) that Squire and Johanna would have used the name Calloway because of a niece's
marriage.
It seems either the Mourning Dove or Nancy maidens names or both could be correct - if we
could just find some documentation.
Have you found anything?
