I regret to say that I am taking a name from a War Memorial and there is so
little information to go on. The date of death and the ilitary unit are not
even specified - an initial and a surname so I can not add to the
information (yet)
There are no BELCHER on the memorial

An interesting project, Michael!
Sorry I can't help though; my CALLOWs were from Dartford, Kent, then
Bermondsey, London, although one, Alfred Charles ("Dodge"), a publican,
ended up in Newbury, Berks.
Are there any BELCHERs?
Jay

Subject: [CALLOW] A name on a War Memorial
Please would you help me? I am researching the names on the War
Memorial
in
our village. The information that I have is very limited, just an initial
and a surname. My objective is to ensure that there is as comprehensive a
record of those who died as is practical. The memorial itself is in
Deddington and it also commemorates people from the nearby villages of
Hempton, Clifton, Duns Tew and Adderbury Some of the names are simple to
track but others have so far eluded me. One such person is Charles CALLOW
or C. CALLOW–as is inscribed on the memorial.
What I have managed to establish is
A birth in the June quarter 1886 Charles Thomas CALLOW was born in
Woodstock
Registration District
1891 Census
Thomas CALLOW 36 is a blacksmith's hammerman living with his wife
Ruth CALLOW 35 and their 6 children
William T CALLOW 14 Alice CALLOW 10
Thomas H CALLOW 8 Ernest CALLOW 6
Charles CALLOW 4 Allan CALLOW 3 months
They lived in Chapel Square, Deddington and all were born in Deddington
1901 Census shows Charlie W CALLOW age 14 born in Deddington working as an
errand boy at 16 South Bank?, Banbury
Gender: Male
But then we hit a snag: Birth in December quarter 1896 Charles Edward
CALLOW
was born in Banbury Registration District
In the 1901 census his family is living in St Mary Neithrop
Francis J CALLOW 42 a blacksmith born in Banbury
Annie CALLOW 43 Born in Banbury
Florence M CALLOW 11 Born in Banbury
John H CALLOW 8 Born in Banbury
William F CALLOW 6 Born in Banbury
Charles E CALLOW 4 Born in Banbury
But I suspect that this is not the family I seek as they do not appear to
be
connected to Deddington
The most likely references on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's
website are
C CALLOW
Lance Corporal, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Service No: 18181
Date of Death: 1 July 1916
Grave Reference: B 35 Redan Bridge Cemetery No.2, Beaumont-Hamel
The alternative is:
CHARLES CALLOW
Pioneer 2nd Signal Company, Royal Engineers Service No: 24900
Date of Death: 16 September 1914
Memorial: La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial
I have not identified any likely marriage.
What I wish to find out is when and where C CALLOW died, where he is
buried,
his military unit and whether he was married. Can anyone help please?
