Hi group, I have been working with a researcher who descends from Alexander.
As we thought, there is no placement for Elizabeth Callison Juvinall in the
family of Moses BUT the family of Alexander has her listed as his daughter which
makes sense since we know that he had a daughter named Elizabeth and that his
son Absolom went to Vermilion Co., Illinois where Elizabeth married. So in
theory, the family of Moses should be pretty complete as far as his children --
from census records.
Does anyone in this group descend from Alexander. A descendant wrote a family
history in 1948 stating that Alexander and Moses were brothers and that their
father died in Virginia. I can not imagine what was available for research at
that time. He thought that Alexander and Moses were the only family that went
to Ohio but he probably had no access to the rest of Ohio. His papers are the
ones with Elizabeth as a child of Alexander.
Here are his notes. He does not mention the son, Armstrong Collison, who was
named in guardianship papers of Alexander.
“Alexander Collison – Died in the 1820’s. Was born in Greenbrier County
near Lewisberg in West Virginia. His ancestors were from Scotland. One brother
was named Moses (who had a son named Hiram). Alexander’s and Moses’s
families were the only Collisons that moved to Ohio (Pike County, six miles from
Piketon) from W. Va. Alexander’s father died in Greenbrier County, W. Va. Moses
Collison in 1840 lived in Vermilion County, Illinois, had a large family that
scattered in the West. (Alexander married Rebecca Kellison)”
Their children:
1. “Absalom (Collison) was born in W. Virginia in 1805 and died 10-6-1853.
His parents died when he was a boy, so he lived with an uncle (brother of
Rebecca, and father of Alex Kellison (born 2-1-1819). Absalom moved to Illinois
Vermilion County about 1828, where he was reported to be strongest man in
county. Pioneer farmer, also worked on the Ohio and Miss. Rivers to New Orleans.
Well acquainted personally with Abe Lincoln during Lincoln-Douglas campaign.
About 1830 he married Mary V. Chenoweth, native of Ohio – born near Columbus,
born 7-24-1812; died 9-8-1885. Chenoweth family from England. In 1828 he
settled in what was then known as Higginsville, in Vermilion County. Mary later
married John Smith. Absalom previously had worked in the Kanawha Salt Works in
West Virginia. Mary Chenoweth’s father’s name was Thomas.”
2. “Elizabeth (Collison) married Josiah Juvinal (or Jurinal). They had
Emily, Caroline, Maria, and William.”
3. “ Polly (Collison) – b. Pike Co., Ohio; died about 1898. Married several
times”
4. “William (Collison) – b. 12-25-1810; d. 4-19-1884; married Mary ? – b.
6-15-1818; d. 9-13-1879. They had 3 children: Rebecca, Marie, and Absolem.
Absolem married Barbara ? b. 6-30-1848 and they had 7 daughters and one son (Geo.
Collison who lived in Rossville, Illinois in 1908) - Geo. died on 9-20-1894,
had W.T. Collison, Montrose, Colo., Newton Collison, Pattensberg, Mo., and
four other children.”
