I am still trying to find who the parents of James and Samuel Callison are. The more that
I look at he info the more I believe that John Gillespie Callison was the brother of James
and Samuel. According to the census John was born in Ky. in 1797, James was born in Ky. ca
1804, and Samuel was born in Tenn. ca 1813. I do not believe they fit the family of
William Callsion unless he was married before he married Marion Chapman. Who else might
have been in Ky at that time and then went to Tenn?
John Gillespie Callison served in Capt. James E. Box's company of Mounted
Volunteers, 2nd. Regt, 3rd Brigade, Texas Militia from 14th of October until the 28th of
October. His stepson, E.D. Rennaugh also served with him, as did T.J. Box. This was in a
campaign to move the Cherokees and other Indians out of East Texas. Samuel fought at San
Jacinto and the Siege of Bexar, so I guess he did not want to fight in that one.
About 1839 James Callsion got land in Texas in Fayette County , and John and Samuel
later moved down to that area. I just do not see John Gillespie as being anything but a
brother to Samuel. He was in Blount County with him before they came to Texas, and I
assume that James accompanied Samuel to Texas, as they both sailed back to New Orleans in
April 1835. I am not sure when John Gillespie came to Texas as he seems to have been in
Blount County sometime in 1838 from what I remember.
Who was in Ky. from 1797 to 1804, and in Tenn. in 1813?
I keep intending to find one of the descendants of Samuel but have not done so yet. That
may give a big clue.
How is the DNA testing going? Any luck yet? How do we log onto the site?
