The entry date was 30 Sept 1785 and the grant date was 20 Dec 1791. This
would be way too early for the William who married Marian Chapman. The land was
in Davidson Co. on both sides of the Pine River. Grant #2840 for 640 acres.
Yes too early for William who married Chapman but not too early for a
William, son of John Sr. (just keeping possibilities in my mind -- no conclusions
-- just speculation) Besides John Sr is the likely canditate at this time.
James Callison got land in Knox Co., 640 acres, 28 Feb 1779. Was he assignee
of someone else. ? Was it military land? The thrice married James was
Quaker/
Hmmmmmm, I don't know if I knew of this one but my guess would be the James
who married Mary Callison. Need to follow up on that land to see when it was
sold. Usually a wife is listed in the sale of property. Might help identify
him better
James Callison was later in Rhea County and was the security for James and
Thomas Mitchell. Didn't a Callison girl marry a Mitchell?
This should be James Callison Jr, son of James and Isabel (depending on the
date) -- married 1794 in Knox county. What was James security for? Yes two
children of James and Isabel married Mitchells -- Robert married Eliz.
Mitchell 1793 in Augusta Co., VA and Margaret Callison married Thomas Mitchell in
1783 Bath Co., VA. Guess I never realized this. Some of the early research was
done by two avid researchers who have now gone to meet their ancestors. It
always surprizes me when I see daughters of James and Isabel in counties other
than Augusta. Why aren't they where their parents are. I may have to double
check this marriage. By the way, thanks Mark, but having a search engine on
our Callison site -- just had to type in Mitchell.
I found Elizabeth Callison in the 1810 census of Grainger Co., Tenn. Whose
widow is she?
The census reads 0 1 1 - 0 1 0 0 1
This means she had two young males and a young girl at that time. She
appears to have died by 1813 as John Clark returns a list of Elizabeth Callison
taxable property for 1813, 210 acres of land.
This would be Elizabeth Young Callison, widow of the thrice married James
Callison whose second wife.
Also in Grainger Co. I found Samuel Callison to Elly Morgan, Dec. 22, 1809
John Keller to Polly Callison, Dec 20, 1809
James Callison to Elizabeth Young, July 17, 1800 - was this the above
mentioned Elizabeth? YES
John Callison, Sr. BM
John Gillmore to Lucinda Callison, Oct 17, 1832 I guess this is too late to
have anything to do with Gilmore Callsion.
James Gillmore BM
Alfred Roach to Jane McDaniel, Aug 28, 1833
John Callison, BM
John Callison to Nancy Grove, Sept 11, 1836
James McFarland, BM
Yes, these people are all in the thrice married James Callison line. The
only questionable one is the bondsman John Callison for the marriage of James
and Elizabeth
Have these all been accounted for? I am sure that they have. Samuel Callison
from Grainger Co. was named Samuel, and my Samuel is the only other one I
know of besides the two
Samuel's sons. Is there any connection?
Yes, Samuels are few and far between. Possibly a maternal name BUT the
mother of the Samuel Callison in Grainger Co is reported to be Mary Callison,
daughter of James and Isabel.
I am going to start looking for a Callison male who is descended from Samuel
to do the DNA test. I hope we have better luck than we just had on our Hood
line. As they say, he ain't a Hood! Matches a couple of other guys but
completely different from any known Hoods. I sort of suspected as much.
Joyce DNA is a mixed blessing (can prove and disprove) but at least it is
accurate. I have a gentleman on one of my other lines -- the only male I have
found-- and he does not want to get tested just in case his line is not
legitimate and he has spent 30 years researching the wrong surname. Said when he
dies, his wife knows to get DNA from the undertaker and have it sent off with
results sent to me. <smile> He is the same age that I am so we'll see how that
plays out.
Take care. Marilyn
