If he was born in Tennessee in 1814 he would fit right in with Samuel, who was born in
Tennessee in 1813. I am sure that you know that many people did not really
"live" in a state but would stop and raise a crop or two in the state and go on
their way to where ever they were going. James was born 1804/5 so he would have been in
the line to be the son of William.
As you mentioned, John Gillespie could very easily be an uncle or James and Sam.

This is William, son of William who married Chapman and brother to Absolom.
They have been found in Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri -- just need to look
more in TN.
