The James Callison that married Sarah Craig was the one who died at Refugio. She was
obviously a widow whose maiden name was Parkhill. Her children were named Callison,
naturally, but the Parkhills named them in their will. Sarah Craig Callison was the mother
of one of the John Gillespie Callisons who was later in Texas. He appears to have been a
little jerk, or big one. He is the one who tried to sell his sister's land, and
stated in a document that he, his mother Sarah, and one sister, can't remember which,
were the only heirs of James H. Callison. There are many documents on file in the Texas
land office tha name all of the heirs of James H. Callison and who got the land, so there
is no doubt it was him. I believe that this James was the son of James Callison and Anne
Gillespie.
When we checked the dates of birth of the two James, the James who died at Refugio was
much older and was not the one who was on the ship with Samuel sailing from Texas to New
Orleans. The ships list names them as family, so I assume he was Samuel's brother. He
probably was in Al. and came to Texas with Samuel in the Fall of 1834 as they went to New
Orleans in early 1835, I think it was March or April. It was the first voyage of the San
Felipe.
That James apparently left Texas, or he did not file for land, as he filed about 1842, I
think, and only got about 300 acres, which I think was a 3rd class head right, while
Samuel and John Gillespie, the older one born in Kentucky and married to Margaret Reneau,
who was probably Margaret Callison, before she married William Reneau, got the first class
head right and got over 4000 acres. James got land in Fayette County, and John Gillespie
and Samuel later moved down by him. I have a letter from an older cousin, descended from
Samuel and his second wife, who says she remembers her brothers or uncles going to
Fayette County to see James grandchildren and talking about going to see their cousins. He
was married to Jane Sargeant, but she died and he married someone else but I don't
believe they had any children. He was the father of Alexander Callison.
Have I confused you even more???
Joyce

I need some big time help with this question -- probably from Jim and Joyce --
and anyone else who has done research in these areas.
We have ONE James Callison who married Sarah Craig in Rhea Co., TN about 1816
or so. Son of James and Anne Gillespie Callison.
We have a James Callison with a brother Samuel who went to New Orleans from
Texas to get ammunition for battles in Texas
We have James Callison who died in 1838 in Battle of Refugio, Texas. -- What do
we have to show that this is the same James who married Sarah Craig in TN? There
is some confusion with his heirs being named PARKHILL instead of CRAIG. Could
this James have been married to a PARKHILL and the other James with the brother
named Samuel been the one who married CRAIG.
We have James Callison who married Jane Sargeant in 1841 Colorado Co., TX.
Could he be the same one who married Sarah Craig -- in a second marriage
ONLINE file -- for whatever it is worth -- has this James as James Henry
Callison born Trump Run, Virginia but I can find no James in the Trump Run
family who might fit this James
Just throwing a few WHAT IF"S out there for discussion. Not trying to
upset any applecarts. Any and all documentation would be helpful. Maybe Mark can
put them online so I don't have to keep asking the same questions over and
over.
No formal report from
familytreedna.com but results of line from Samuel who had
the brother James puts them
in the same Callison ancestry as the rest of us.
Take care. Marilyn
