Hi Callison cousins,
I was playing around on
ancestry.com and thought it would be fun to research
all the census listings that they have on their site-- even though they are
not complete-- and also to help newer researches understand who all the
people were. There is an great site on our homepage for Callison census
records if you are looking for your ancestors. In the beginniing--- There
were two James Callisons in Virginia-- an early James found first in 1746 or
so and a later one who came in via Pennsylvania. The first James was married
to Isabella and the second was married 3 times, with one of the wives being
the daughter of James and Isabella. A court case establishes that the two
were related although I don't think anyone has determined how. Ancestry does
not show any Callison in the 1790 census although they were certainly around
and verified on tax records. In early Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky records the
name was listed as Callison/Collison/Kellison and Kellerson which has made
the research lots of fun. The Collison family in Maryland for that time
period seems to be a whole different family and the Kellisons in Virginia
seem to originate with a Daniel who was sometimes known as Callison. His
branch was interconnected with Callisons but seems to be a distinct line.
Additionally by 1810, there were some Callison/Collison families in Virginia
that we have no proof of who their parents were but most probably descend
from the sons of the older James. Both early James left wills naming their
children for which we can be eternally grateful. It is in the next generation
that "unknown's" come into play. These males were Moses, Absolem, William
Jackson, William who married Marian Chapman, Alexander, Isaac who married
Cynthia Robinson ,Hiram and possibly another William. It is too bad that
there was not a census in Virginia for 1800 because we might have been able
to place some of our children with unknown parents into family groups. So by
1800 or so, we know of three generations from two lines of Callison's. There
were daughters also but I just wanted to look at the males of the line this
time. Also there is a William Callison in Westmorland Co, Va who would have
been born in this era. Westmorland Co is some distance from where the rest of
the Callison's lived but Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio are also. Pat, what can
you tell us about him.
By 1800 the make up of the families looked like this. You will see the
repetition of the names James, John and William in the family of the older
James.
1. Older James died in Augusta County, Va
2. John married ?. Known to have two sons born by 1771

apparent direct descendants

By 1810, there were more children and grandchildren born into these two
primary families.
Whoops, this is probably way over the limit for length on mail lists. As my
old time research friends know-- I get carried easily carried away. Sorry.
Take care
