The last I have on James Callison that was married to Ann Gillespie is a court
document in 1821 in Rhea Co, Tenn. He had sold his land by that time. He started
selling part of 1200 acres he had bought from Annanias McCoy before 1813. I think
the land was in Knox Co., originally and he bought it before the county of Rhea was
organized. His last recorded land sell was in 1818, but the four recorded land
sells only accounted for 716 acres. Maybe he had sold some before the county was
organized. The last I found of him in Rhea County is in September 1821: State vs
James Callison. Solicitor general judgment against def for costs in this case, it
being the opinion of this court that there exists strong presumption of guilt of the
defendant. It is considered that he pay costs in this behalf expended, whereupon
William Gillespie confesses judgment with defendant for sd costs. (Was this the
brother of Anne Gillespie?)
Robert Callison was in Lauderdale Co., Alabama, as was James Callison. Sidney
Pharris, wife of Robert, committed suicide there later. Don't have the exact date
with me now. Robert Callison married Sidney Pharris on March 28, 1816, and James
Callison married Sarah Craig on May 12, 1818. John Callison was a bondsman for John
Armstrong in 1818, all in Rhea Co. This does not mean that all were the sons of
James and Ann Callsion, but I believe that there is enough proof as they were the
only Callisons in Rhea Co., Tenn. I think that there is a chance that James, the
father, also went to Lauderdale Co., Ala. One James Callison died there in 1850, but
not sure if it was him. The younger James Callison died at Goliad in the battle for
Texas independence. I read an article once that stated that Sam Houston and James
Callison, both from Rockbridge Co., Va., came to Texas together, and that James had
at Goliad. Whoever wrote it was wrong because Sam Houston came from Tenn., and James
came from Ala. However, I think that both were probably born in Rockbridge Co., Va.
and they were cousins. Sam Houston's mother or grandmother was a Gillespie. I forgot
exactly how they were related, but James Callison's land in Rhea Co. ws next to
Samuel Houston's. I think it was the father, not the son, though.
James Callison and Anne Gillespie were married in Tenn. in 1794, and sold land in
Augusta Co., Va. in 1800. If James was born in 1795 he could have been 23 when he
married Sarah Craig. I need to look on the census and find how many children he had
and how old they were, but unfortunately there is just a very scanty census for
Alabama in 1820. Maybe I can find him in 1830. There has to be another daughter of
David Parkhill that is not listed that was married to James Callison before he
married Sarah Craig, because those children living with the Parkhills were his heirs
after he died at Goliad. They are listed on the official papers from the Land Office
in Austin as the heirs of James Callison. The only way they could be his heirs was
for him to have had a son by a previous marriage that married a Parkhill.
I will keep searching and maybe find something. I am going to the library tomorrow
but we don't have a large one here in Midland. Miracles happen, though. As far as
Samuel C. Callison, and George, they have to be the children of James and Anne. They
were in Blount Co., or at least Samuel was as he left on a wagon train from there in
1835 with the Box family, and they all went to Houston Co. John Gillespie Callison
also went to Houston Co. and got land there in 1838. They are the only Callison
family in Texas, except for a James Callison from Ky. that went to Fayette Co. by
1850.
Hope someone can help solve this mystery.

Hi group, I have gotten emails from Joyce Moore who has done "a
little work"
on the family of James Callison Jr and Anne Gillespie. Actually she had done
ALOT of work. She has documents that pertain to the children of James and
Sarah Craig Callison who were married in Rhea County, Tn but ended up with
some Parkhill descendants. I have also gotten an email from a Parkhill
descendant with these four Callison children names as heirs in a Parkhill
will in Alabama. Now, I am trying to determine if the children's names are
the same to verify that they are the same children. I found it interesting in
the Parkhill info that I received that they were in Rhea County, Tn also but
were in Alabama by 1820. I don't think that James and Sarah Craig Callison
married until 1816 or so but that is just pulled from my memory bank. James's
brother Robert married in Rhea County also, to a family who was in the area
(Phares/Faires) and they all went to Alabama-- both Robert and the Phares
family. John G. Callison (presumed brother to James and Robert) was in Blount
Co, Ala by 1830, Robert Callison and the Phares were in Lauderdale Co and the
Parkhill family was in Marshall County. (Blount and Marshall are adjoining.)
Now my question, has anyone found anything on James Callison in Alabama. It
makes me think that he must have gone to Alabama also if it is suspected that
a son of his married a Parkhill daughter who lived in Alabama. What does
anyone have on James and Sarah Craig Callison as far as dates and locations.
Also has anyone found Robert and Sidney Phares Callison between their
marriage and the 1840 Alabama census. AND has anyone found James Jr and Ann
Gillespie Callison at all in any census records, Tax records, land records or
anything. I need to get back to my John and Jane McClure Callison line but
thought I'ld go off on this tangent for awhile. Also, does anyone else think
that George W. who went to Mo., Richard who went to Iron Co, Mo and Lewis who
went to Arkansas (and seems like a couple more) all descend from Robert and
Sidney Phares Callison. These guys were all born in Alabama in the time period
that Robert was there -- oh yes, I think there was a W.R. also. Guess if we
add these people as descendants of James Jr and Anne to the master page, we
can just put a notation that no concrete proof exists at this point. Gotta
quit testing my memory -- it is going to blow a circuit. Take care
