I guess the origin of the name depends on how far back you want to trace it.
The Callison family of Virgina and points west is thought to be from County
Armagh, Ireland. That area of Ireland was settled by people that came from
Scotland previously. The family in early Virginia were Presbyterians ( The
national religion of Scotland) so many researchers, myself included, consider
the family name to be Scotch Irish. However, I have had one report that the
Callison surname has been found under Clan McCallister line in Scotland. I
have found nothing on this myself. The family name in Ireland and Virginia
was Callison. The branches that went to Ohio, used the Collison spelling with
all but one line reverting back to Callison. The Collison family found at the
same time period in Maryland and New England states are mostly of the
Catholic faith. No connection has been found with them. Another line
identifed as Callison in early Virginia, eventually becomes Kellison and do
not seem to be connected other than through intermarriages. Take care all
