Good morning all, I know that we have a new member -- Marian-- who is
connected to Hiram's family -- the EARLY Hiram.
She sent me the following last night. Thanks Marian. We are much further
down the road now than when this was written and now know that part of it is
incorrect.
When I emailed you before I mentioned to you that I had a OLD book that is
called " History Of Augusta County Virginia Early Families & Settlers". In
it
does have a reference to the Callison family. It states:
The immigrant ancestor of Samuel Callison was probably the Quaker, James
Callison, who arrived in America about 1763-65. On August 5, 1765 a James
Callison was received on certificate from Ballyhagen, Armah County, Ireland in a
Quaker monthly meeting at Burlington, New Jersey. In 1766 James Callison was
residing in August County, Virginia near relatives, James and Isabelle
Callison.
OK I am going to take a break here. Do we have any record of James Callison
in Augusta Co., VA -- other than the fact that he married a daughter of James
and Isabelle Callison. I was curious as to why he was even mentioned in a
History of Augusta so apparently, I am missing something in his history. The ot
her info corresponds to what our research shows. Note: NEAR RELATIVES. We
hopefully have DNA testing underway to prove that they actually were relatvies.
Common sense says yes, but concrete proof is nice. As far as Samuel is
concerned, most of his history is found in TN so that is really curious why he was
singled out when so many others actually had Augusta Co., History
Now back to the book:
He received several grants of land in Greenbrier County, Virginia and about
1791 James Callison and
his family moved to Grainger County, Tennessee where he obtained a tract of
600 acres. He died there in 1808. James was married twice, and his wife at
the time of his death was Elizabeth Young, whom he married in Grainger County
July 17, 1800. His will named his heirs as wife Elizabeth and children
Anthony, Issac, James, Jesse, Samuel, Elisha, Abigail, Mary, Rebecca, Ann and Ruth.
James Callison Jr. was
administrator of the estate.
OK time for another break. This James did go to Grainger Co. TN where he
died in 1808. He actually married 3 times with Mary Callison, d/o James and
Isabel as the second wife. This was ascertained by the cemetery record for his
son Elisha naming his mother as Mary Callison Callison. Elizabeth McCallister
was his first wife.
Now back to the book
James Callison Jr. married Anne Gillespie January 21, 1794; she died at an
early age.
My comments
Wrong James. The James Jr, son of the James that is being talked about,
stayed in Greenbrier Co., VA -- did not go to TN.
The James who married Anne Gillespie 1794 Knox Co., TN is the son of James
and Isabel.
These are conclusions that have been tested and talked about for many years
-- there were some great early Callison researchers who came before us.
If anyone has info on the thrice married James being located in Augusta Co.,
please let me know. Take care all, Marilyn

Marilyn,
I am glad you received and liked the information from the book on
Augusta County Virginia. It is a OLD 185? dated book that I picked up of
all places at a THRIFT STORE, so watch those type of places many GOOD
treasures await the lucky one who is patient and takes the time to
go through things there.I just happened on it, beginners luck I guess
as I did NOT know ANY Callison's at the time!!!Jim and I were not married
nor had we even met when I found the book. I just kept it as it was
OLD!!!The front cover is half torn off as are the first couple of pages
but the rest
of the book is intact and in fairly good shape considering what it looks
like it has been through!!!one.
BTW , I do NOT loan out this book to anyone! It is so frail and it
is irreplaceable if it were to get lost ! I have had LOTS of people ask,
but the answer
always remains the same. Sorry and I am not insinuating anything
about you or the Callison website group, I just wanted to set the rules
straight on the book
to start with!!!
Have a GREAT Sunday!! Marian Callison :-)
