To add to the notes of Joyce on James Callison. -- to help keep everyone
straight. We KNOW that James and Samuel were brothers from a ship record sailing
from New Orleans to Texas where they lived. They had gone to N. O. to get
arms to for the Texans -- or at least the ship was for that purpose.
Name: Jas Callison
Arrival Date: 13 Apr 1835
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Brazoria, Texas
Ship Name: San Felipe
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
National Archives' Series Number: M259_12
Samuel was age 22 listed next to him. James was a blacksmith and Samuel was
listed as a planter
I am not sure if that ship record if the first entry for them but Joyce can
fill us in on that.
James got married in 1841
Name: James Callison
Marriage Date: 2 Sep 1841
Spouse: Jane Sargeant
Marriage County: Colorado
Marriage State: Texas
Source: Texas Marriages, 1814-1909
He was on the tax list for Colorado Co., TX this year
Also in Texas at this time was another James Callison, son of James Jr,
grandson of James and Isabella, who had married Sarah Craig in Roane Co., TN in
1814/1816. He actually was killed in Texas in one of the battles about 1838.
Mayfield, James S., Texas jurist and legislator born in Tennessee in 1809.
Fayette County, September 29, 1845. Signed Mayfield and Crutcher, attorneys.
Petition for James CALLISON, auditor for the estate of Jasper A. SARGEANT.
In 1860 James is in Fayette Co., TX
James age 56, born KY owned property
Ann, age 55, looks like born LA
Alexander, age 18 (1842) looks like born Florida
S.A. (female) age 16 also looks like Florida
So Joyce and anyone else from this line -- please fill in the blanks for
both James and His brother Samuel.
At the time of his birth in Kentucky -- just using this census-- and only
Lincoln Co., KY which is where we know some of the family was living
1803 tax records showed Joseph and Absolom Kellison
Next tax record was 1806 which showed Joseph and William Kellason
Joseph is a known son of William the elder and Absolom's family has a Bible
naming his children and James and Samuel don't fit with either of them.
William married Marian Chapman in 1804 Greenbrier Co., VA-- remember we have
him in tax records in Greenbrier Co., Virginia 1802-1804. Theoretically he
was in Ky in 1805 because we don't have that tax record but we do have
Virginia and he is not listed. His father is up for grabs -- ??? William or John or
someone else. By 1810, he had 3 sons but we only know the names for two of
them -- William and Absolom -- they all went to Morgan Co., MO. William
Kelloson, Casey Co., KY, also had an extra male in the same age group in the
household with him -- 18-26
Now -- as we find James in earlier and later census records and compare his
census results with Samuel -- it starts to get a little muddied.
