I've often wondered if "alias Baldwin" (from the marriage account) could
have been another FIRST name Hiram could have used.
Dianna, anything in genealogy is possible <smile> When Hiram's marriage
record first came up for discussion, I spend some time researching (mostly asking
other researchers -- some knowledgeable and some not) what the alias meant
and the general consensus was illegitimate. This was not carved in stone
however.
I do know that around 1787 or so, Elizabeth Cutlip had a "base born" child
and her father was taken to court for not raising his daughter better. Base
born equaled illegitimate. I don't think that anyone has researched any BALDWIN
court records to see if there was any mention of Baldwin "base born"
children. This was one of my tidbits to lean towards Callison as the father of Hiram
-- rather than the mother-- because no one has found any mention of Callison
"base born" children in court records.
I don't know if every illegitimate birth was treated this way -- or just the
Cutlips-- because he had two daughters involved.
Take care all, Marilyn
