OK gang, I hope this will get the ball rolling and be a help to everyone. I
use so many websites for genealogy (free) that thought I would add my fovorites
and then maybe everyone would do the same
The big ones are
usgenweb.com
go to individual states and then individual counties. Some are better than
others
You can do a surname search by state in the genweb archives
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/newsearch.htm
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~markfreeman/callison.html -- our
Callison webpage --may be outdated in some areas but if your family is not listed
here, please send a file to Mark and when he has time, he'll add you in. How
can others find you if you are not listed
familysearch.org.
The site for the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City. You can access their
ancestral file (subject to errors since it is just research by others) the IGI
(accurate) and the 1880 census. In addition you can get microfilm numbers and book
call numbers previous to any trip to SLC for research to save time.
The IGI usually has a B a C or an M. These dates are taken from actual church
or courthouse records for Birth, Christening, and Marriage. Do not rely on
them 100% but gives you a good road map to get the originals
Social Security Death index
One of the many links in
rootsweb.com
http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/
This will not give you a place of death -- only a date and the last place of
residence
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/index.htm
Library of Virginia catalogs -- this is the only State specific site that I
am sending but since so many lines originated in Virginia, I thought I would
send it on. It has land records etc. Just click on LVA catalogs when you get to
this page
I use this one ALOT. Counties are so important in genealogy and in this
government site, you can put in the name of the City and State and it will give you
the county

The next one is again for Virginia -- Chalkey's reference books -- a mainstay
for genealogy.
Click on each volume and then go to the bottom right corner to INDEX and
click on that. When you get to your surname, you can click on the page numbers for
the reference

Sandi Evilsizer's website -- a great researcher who makes all of her research
available for free. Always happy to do lookups
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~evilsizer/books.html

This site links you to searchable database for each state
This is a fun one to start with and then create a learning experience to
learn all about the entries. You put in an ancestor -- or your self with date of
birth and death -- or present date and it creates a timeline for what happened
in that time period.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors

Another searchable database by surname or state

This is about half of my list. Enjoy. Send yours. Take care
