I thought this was interesting. Take care. Marilyn
Dear Marilyn,
Glad to make your acquaintance - nice to encounter another member of the
Callison family!
Thanks for your email enquiring about family ancestry - I am happy to tell
you what I know.
My father was also called Richard and was a local government official
(Borough Surveyor for the town of Bolton,Lancashire) He died in 1988.My mother
still lives in the house in Sale (just south of Manchester) where I was brought
up.
I believe that an ancestor of mine came over to England in the late
nineteenth century in order to work (presumably as a labourer) on the Manchester Ship
Canal. He may have been called Isaac Callison.Either Isaac or one of his
descendants apparently owned six cottages and a cinema known as the Salford
Alhambra. He is reputed to have drunk the Salford Alhambra and all six cottages -
remaining in the last one as a tenant!
Either Isaac or one of his descendants was reputed to be so strong that he
was able to hold two hundredweight sacks of coal one in each hand at arms
length.
There is an author called Brian Callison who specialises in sea stories.I
believe he lives in Scotland.I think he is very talented - I particularly like
his novel entitled "Ferry Down"
There is or was a doctor called Callison in Memphis, Tenessee. I know about
him because he rang me up out of the blue in the sixties and took me out to
dinner because I was the only Callison in the London Telephone Directory - this
Callison network!
I can't think of anything else but I'll send a copy of this to my mother -
she might remember something more,
Best Wishes,
Richard Callison.
