Just interesting
Still thinking about those 5 shillings that William and John Callison got
from their father and comparning that with the cost of liquor set by the courts
in 1784
West Indian Rum per gallon -- 16 shillings
Peach brandy -- 10 shillings
Apple Brandy -- 5 shillings
Whisky -- 8 shillings
and realizing that their inheritance would buy each of them 1 gallon of
apple brandy -- meanwhile the other two brothers got land that they sold for
about $2000. HMMMMMMM. That would buy a lot of apple brandy. Of course, they had
to take care of the house, the land, an apparent handicapped sister, an
illigitimate child, a niece etc. except that James kinda left the area and Robert
was left in charge of it all. Sounds like some families in today's time,
doesn't it? Take care. Marilyn
