John, I think that Barb and I tried to put Arthur into every McClure family
in the many books about the McClure family in Augusta and Rockbridge County.
Leads me to think that he may have been the original immigrant to Virginia
possibly from Pennsylvania. Just have to keep trudging along with him. Take care all

Yes - William Flack was a brother to Benjamin Flack, father of Ann B.
Flack, who married Absalom Callison. I have always thought there must
be a connection between Absalom and Susannah. Some researchers show
that she married Christopher Flick, but I think someone made a mistake
in a transcription years ago and it has passed through many hands
without being corrected. I have had a local resident send me the
marriage record and it definitely is William Flack and Susannah
Collison.
William Flack and brother Benjamin were sons of James Flack and Ann
Baxter of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Both served during the
Revolution.
Wish I could place either the Flacks or Absalom in Virginia, but I have
not been able to as of yet.

also. Rena, this is your field of expertise. The Daisy listed here is

Dolly (Dorothy) Callison, daughter of Robert and granddaughter of James

Benjamin and
Robert. Again the only one that we can rule out as parents is William
because
he had a son named Robert who was different than this one. So did John

John, Isabell, James, Elizabeth, Alexander, Absolom, Susannah, Benjamin

Robert??? Whew I am exhausted thinking of this. Do we have any record at
all of
Absolom in Virginia. I know that we have Alexander, James and Elizabeth
but
not sure about Absolom in Virginia. Rena, do you know if Ann Flack and
William
Flack were related? Also need to check in what year, Benjamin was

Virginia to see how he compares in age with this Benjamin. Well, enough

Were you just looking for any Flacks in Va., or just those married to the Callisons? Some of my husband's family, the Bowles, were in Brunswick Co, Va. and one of the sisters married a Flack. This would have been around 1800, or a little earlier, from what I remember. They all moved to Iredell Co., N.C. and then on into Alabama.

Are you familiar with the book, McClures in Virginia by James Alexander
McClure? It gives a good history of the name as well as the Alexander Family.
I downloaded select pages from the web from the books section of one ot the
big genealogical services . I believe it was Heritage.
He also covers the Mitchels and mentions the marriages with the Callisons.
He says that James McClure was the founder of the family in Augusta Co.
was born in Ireland 1690. Cames to America with wife Agnes and 5 children and
settled in Long Meadow on Middle River of the Shenandoah.
First mention of his name is found in Humes Old Field Book, page 53, survey
for James McClure 1738.
He buys land from Beverely for 5 shillings , 5 June 1739
On -page 218 Order Book 1739 Orange Co courthouse we find the following:
At a court held for Orange County on Thursday the 24th of July 1740 James
McClure made oath that he importated himself, Agnes, John, Andrew, Elionor, Jean
and James McClure Jun'r at his own charge form Ireland to Philadelphia and
from thence into this coloney
Those searching the Alexanders will find them traced back to the Norse.

Well, I am not making much progress on the family names who eventually
married into the Callison family. Just checking to see if the ancestors were in
Augusta County at the same time as James and Isabelle.
I can find NO indication that Arthur McClure whose daughter, Jane, married
John McClure was in Augusta County previous to Greenbrier Co but that does not
mean it is a certainty. If not for the will of James Callison, we would not
know that his sons John and William were connected to Augusta county either.
I found ancestors of Thomas, Ann and Isabel Elliott who all married into the
Callison family in Augusta. They seemed to have land dealings with Christopher
Graham whose name rings a bell with Absolom's family. Not sure about this.
I found NO Shumates in Augusta County. If you have info on any surname that
your Callison person married that was in Augusta County pre 1800, please send
it on.
I have Richard MORRIS married Jane Callison in 1761. He bought land on
Jackson's River that apparently was in the part of Augusta County that became
Botetourt County. I don't know WHERE he was previous to his marriage.
How about the Burnsides, Cutlip, Hanna, Edmiston, Hall, Mcclung, Cavendish
and all those early families. Anyone know about them at all. How about the ones
who were in Ohio? Bonnett etc., did they originate in Augusta.
So far in Augusta, I have Callison, Morris, Elliott, McCutcheon, Beard,
Evans, Mitchell, Henderson. Where did all of these people migrate to -- if they did.
Guess the next county we will have to look at is Botetourt/Greenbrier/ Bath
for Virginia since there were quite a few there. For some reason, Jesse
Callison of James and Mary Callison Callison family went to Washington Co., Va for
awhile. Wouldn't it be fun to know WHY. Some of the families started migrating
from Virginia to Kentucky and Tennessee before 1800.
When you mention the Burnsides, Hannas, McClungs they all passed through
what is now Augusta County, although the McClungs may have been more focused
on Rockbridge Co. They headed on west to what is now Greenbrier, Bath,
Pocahontas, Monroe and Botetourt Cos. in their next jump. And further west
later on. James and Isabel Callison stayed in the original Augusta, their
children like the younger members of the lines just mentioned moved farther
west in Virginia and then in the next generation on to Tennessee, Kentucky
and Ohio. And then on and on to the west. Terry Burnside

Still have not found them on the map of the Beverly Patent but at least this
shows that their land was in the Calf Pasture -- where Daniel's was located, I
think. Now if we could just connect William J. land in Augusta in some manner
we might hit pay dirt
Name: Robert McCutchen
Date: Sep 18, 1787
Location: Augusta Co., VA
Property: 100 acres on Calfpasture.
Notes: This land record was originally published in "Chronicles of the
Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court
Records of Augusta County" by Lyman Chalkley.
Remarks: Property part of 358 conveyed by Beverley to Robert McCutchen and
by Robert and Margaret to their son, William.
Description: Landowner
Book date: 26-88
This MIGHT be the tract of land bought by Daniel Callison adjoining John
McCutcheon so I SHOULD be able to find it on the Beverly Patent to see how close
to James Callison. So far, no luck. I don't know the relationship between John
and Robert McCutcheon.
Name: Elizabeth McCutcheon
Date: Nov 16, 1773
Location: Augusta Co., VA
Property: Tract on Little Calfpasture.
Notes: This land record was originally published in "Chronicles of the
Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court
Records of Augusta County" by Lyman Chalkley.
Remarks: Property conveyed by Beverley to James McCutcheon, deceased, 26 Nov
1747, and devised by James to sons John and Patrick.
Description: Grantor's Wife
Book date: 20-10
Reply to question no. 1. The parents of James Callison, the first of your
line to come to America, were William and Marry Callison. James had a
brother, Anthony, who is my ancestor. James was married to Isabella in 1742
in Ireland. No other information, including Isabella's family name, is
available. Anthony married, Abigail Witherelt, in a well documented wedding
in 1734 at a Quaker meeting house, County Armagh, the Province of Ulster.
Anthony and Abigail had 5 known children. Only one, James, went to America.
James was born in 1739. He remained a Quaker, attending a Quaker meeting in
Ulster in 1763, and one in Burlington, New Jersey in August 1765. He is
believed to have married Elizabeth McAllister in Ireland and brought his
wife to America with him. He and Elizabeth went from New Jersey to visit his
uncle James who owned land in the Beverly Patent, Augusta County. The
younger James was exempted from militia service in April 1766 by a Court
Martial in Augusta County. After 1766 he and wife headed for the frontier,
the Greenbrier river valley. In Feb. 1774 he had 589 acres surveyed on the
north side of the Greenbrier river. In 1777, he was one of a group of
leading citizens of the Greenbrier valley to petition for the formation of
Greenbrier County. (The petition was granted later that year). Sometime
between 1770 and 1780, James Callison's first wife died and he married
after1780 to.....Mary Callison, daughter of James and Isabella Callison.
James became a significant landowner in the Greenbrier Valley but in the
1790s he headed west to Grainger County, Tennessee where he headquartered
until he died in 1808 About documentation. The 1734 wedding and legal
transactions involving James in Augusta and Greenbrier Counties are
documented. The rest is from a family historian, Evelen Callison Witeck, and
from internet sources.. Terry Burnside.

Note in the 1790 and 1800 tax records, Hiram (according to his marriage
record) is presumed to be living with Robert along with Isabell, daughter of John
Jr.
Please plug these marriages into the master list -- for anyone keeping track.
Does anyone know of any Callison births for this time period determined by
cemetery records or anything
Jane (Jean) Callison married Nov.-17- 1761 Augusta County, Virginia to
Richard Morris
Margaret Callison & Thomas Mitchell 28 March 1786; Augusta County
Robert Callison married Elizabeth Mitchell February 16, 1793. Augusta County,
Virginia
Also the following church note
August 10, 1756
" A petition from ye session of ye north Mountain congregation in Augusta,
was presented to ye Presbytery, requesting that one of ye members may be sent
thither to moderate in ye session in determining a difference between Mr. Brown
and JAMES CALLISON.
The minutes of Hanover Presbytery which follow show that Mr. Brown was a
"New Side" minister and pastor of new Providence Church and that he had refused
to baptize one of Mr. Callison's children.
Can everyone document any info on their ancestor up to 1800 male and female.
I think we have tried this before but here goes AGAIN. I am not sure if any
Isaac descendants or Margaret Callison McCutcheon descendants belong to the
group or not. Here is what I have

Thanks John, so we know that William and his sons, Joseph, Robert and John
all fought in the War of 1812 along with John, son of John and his sons John Jr
and Arthur and 3 sons in law.
Also in Kentucky Hiram, and brothers Benjamin and Robert
Patriotic group weren't they. In fact, in my direct line. I have
James Callison and Arthur McClure who furnished provisions to the troops in
the Rev. War, no clue about their son, John but he should have been old enough
to fight in the Rev. War. John Jr, War of 1812
Charles, too young for War of 1812
Isaac Milton, Civil War
Joseph Thomas, husband of Bessie Callison, Canadian Army WW I
Sylvester, my dad, WW II
Randy, our son, Air Force during Persian Gulf
Who knows about the next generation---
Take care all

Elizabeth Callison who lived in Dallas Co Mo
My gut feeling is that she is Elizabeth, wife of William and daughter in law
of Moses. Moses and his family migrated from Ohio to Illinois to Missouri. So
matches birth pattern for Elizabeth and her children Ohio to Illinois to
Missouri. Elizabeth had a daughter named Matilda as did Moses. Note: in the 1840
census on the same page as William, there is a Matilda BONNETT, (same last name
as the wife of Moses) so possibly a Bonnett name. The lineup is Matilda,
Moses, Hiram and William. William with one son age 5-10 and 1 daughter under age 5
and both adults age 20-30, Vermillion Co., Illinois.
In 1850 Dallas Co., MO these people would be mother age 30-40, son age 15-20
and daughter age 10-15. Your Elizabeth had mother age 35, son age 15, daughter
age 10.
Moses and his son Hiram were in Dallas County also along with some other

So again, just my gut feeling. I see on our Callison master page that we have
George and Absolom as children of William with no other info so I am not sure
about that. I hope that one day this can either be proved or disproved. Take

Hi Marlyn:
Moses Callison was the brother-in-law of Abraham Bonnett. Abrahams
sister Catherine Bonnett was the wife of Moses. They are my
gggrandparents, Also Abraham Bonnett is my gggrandfather as his daughter
Elizabeth married her 1st cousin Hiram Callison and they were indeed in
Mssouri. Just thought I would throw this information in for what it is
worth.

Don't forget Joseph, son of William, who in the 1812 war had his name spelled
Killison and fought with 6th regiment of Davenports Kentucky Mounted
Volunteers where he is listed as a corporal sergeant
John
I will ask again, maybe someone has found out....who was the husband of Elizabeth Callison who lived in Dallas Co Mo and was on the 1850 census with children born in ill and mo.....I was told her maiden name was Tucker.....She would be my Great Great Grand Mother.....Thanks
Ann Givens
Have a great day!
Just trying to get my thoughts organized. I can only find references to the
men who served in the War of 1812 for Ohio on the internet plus I know that
Hiram served for Kentucky. Seems like many of the 3rd/4th generation from James
and Isabella should have served
Ohio Capt Sims company Champaign Company
John Callison, Sr and Jr, Arthur Callison and John's sons in law, Thomas
Elliott, William Buckley and William Overpeck. William Buckley and William
Overpeck both got bounty land for this service
Did people in Virginia serve in this War??
Gallia County, Ohio William Callison/Collison -- No other family names in
this company. We know that William, son of James and Isabella was in Gallia
County at this time
County Unknown (but probably Ross)
Moses Callison/Collison, Abraham Bonnet(father in law, I think), Joseph
Boiler (married to Nancy Calison), John Kelleson (?son of Daniel in Virigina)
Ross County
John Collison -- Is this John who married Elizabeth Cutlip
Probably Ross County -- another company
William Collison???
Unknown County -- looks like possibly Gallia
John Callison--?? son of William, Robert Callison-- son of William, James
Jardin (married to an Isabell -- William Callison was administrator of his will.
??? Isabell Callison), William Jones (?? who was the father of Isabel Jones
married to James Callison in Gallia Co.)
Unknown (probably Ross County)
James Callison --?? son of William
1. Who were the parents of James Callison, when was he born, when did he marry
2. What was Isabella's maiden name, when was she born, when did she die
3. When did they come to this country
4. Who were the parents of Alexander, Absolom, Hiram, Nancy (Newingham),
Nancy (Boiler), William who married Chapman, Isaac who married Robinson, William
Jackson, John who married Cutlip, James who died 1827, Elizabeth (sister to
James)
5. Who were the children of William and John. When and where did they each die
6. Were the Kellisons actually Callisons
OK that covers 3 generations with I am sure many more unanswered questions.
What else would you like to know about the these generations and maybe one day
we can knock down one or two brick walls.
It is almost inconceivable to me that John Sr. would not name a son James,
esp. since he named a daughter Isabella so I feel very strongly that the James
who died in 1827 Greenbrier Co was the son of John Sr and is the other male
listed with John Sr in the 1787 tax record. John Jr. named his first daughter
Elizabeth so Elizabeth, sister to that James, fits nicely with that family line.
Alexander was thought to be a son of John Sr also by the early researchers.
The only connecting link I can find for Alexander is that he, John Jr and John
Sr. were all listed on the same day for tax records for Bath Co to signify that
they were closely connected. It is interesting that he named a son, Absolom,
for whatever that is worth. Some researchers have that Nancy Callison Newenham
is the illigitimate child of Elizabeth Cutlip who married John Callison but
1) we don't know that John Callison was the father of that child 2) we don't
even know the sex of that child so I am not sure about her. Oh well, enough
rambling for tonight. I keep telling myself to stick to the family of John Jr but
I just can't help myself from trying to see if anyone has some more input on
these brick walls. <smile> Take care

Another old topic but thought I would try again. What lines use the name
Gillespie as a middle name or a first name -- excluding the line of James Callison
and Anne Gillespie.
I have ZILCH middle names for John Jr. and his children. What a shame.
I THINK that Elizabeth Callison Morrison and Absolom lines both used this
name but need someone to let me know about this. Are there any others??? Take care
Marilyn
