Am looking for the parents of my gggrandfather John Longest Hudgins b 22 Nov 1822 "7
miles as the crow flies" from Old Point Comfort, Mathews Co VA. According to family
lore, his father was an elderly widower with children when he married a younger woman.
They had a daughter Annie and were expecting their 2nd child (my JL) when Mr. Hudgins died
(that would be sometime in 1822). JL's mother married a Mr.Callis and they had
children - 2 of whom were Gus and Henry. JL and Mr.Callis did not get along so JL was
apprenticed to a blacksmith. In 1840 at age 18, JL came to Brazoria Co Texas to live. In
1884 he returned to VA to visit family. He visited a half brother in Newport News who had
a son named John Holder Hudgins. I'm guessing this boy was probably 12-14 yrs old at
the time. JL also had a niece, Mary Callis; he sent her money to come to Texas where she
married a Fred Reeves. In about 1963 there was a Louise Parsons (married name) living in
the Newport News/Norfolk a!
rea who was a descendent thru the Callis connection to the Hudgins family.
I feel like I'm dancing all around JLs parents, but I just can't seem to pin them
down. Any help would be appreciated.
