Do you have the names Gus or Henry Callis (born after 1825) in your list? They would be
the 1/2 brothers to my gggrandfather John Longest Hudgins who was born in Mathews Co in
1822. JL's father died before he was born and his mother (widow Hudgins) married a
Mr. Callis (perhaps James). According to family lore, JL and Mr. Callis didn't get
along and JL was apprenticed to a blacksmith. At age 18 he packed up and came to Texas.
In 1880 he did go back to visit family in VA, and shortly after that trip (I think) he
sent money to VA for his niece, Mary Callis, to come to Texas. She stayed here and
married a Fred Reeves. Does any of that fit with what you have?
In the 1960's, there was a Louise Parsons (married name) living in Norfolk or Newport
News. She was a descendent of the Hudgins/Callis union. My parents took my grandmother
(age 89) to VA to visit this "Cousin Louise." Louise was probably in her 60s or
70s at that time.
JL's parents are a major stone wall for a number of us who are working on the family
tree. For whatever reason, neither the name of his mother or father has come down the
line.
JL also had older Hudgins 1/2 brothers and sisters (his birth father had been married
before) and I believe he had a full sister named Ann or Annie who was a little older than
he. I was hoping we could get through the wall from the Callis family angle.
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
