Hi Callis cousins,
I just wanted to send this brief note that I have volunteered to be the
administrator for our list, it seems the last one abandoned us. First of
all ... My name is Nikki, and I would like to "break the ice" by
explaining my connection to the Callis surname.
My mothers maiden name is Callis, her fathers name was Leonard (Leo)
Callis. Leonard Callis [b Oct 4, 1891, Sumner County, TN - d. Aug 16,
1958, Sumner County, TN] was the son of Albert Alonzo (Lon) Callis and
Ida Marlin, of Sumner County, TN. Lon Callis was one of the sons of Pvt
James Callis of the 44th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, who died in a
hospital outside of Atlanta during the Civil War. When he died his wife
was forced to give up Lon and his 3 younger brothers in foster care.
Their names were George Thomas (Tobie) Callis [b. 17 Oct 1859 - d. 17
Mar 1946] and John Edward (Ed) Callis [b. 5 Feb 1863 - d. 30 Apr 1938].
Their grandfather (James father) was Daniel Gregory Callis from
Mecklenburg VA.
Well it gets complicating from here, so I'll just stop for now and let
you all have a roll call and the Callis line you are researching, maybe
we can get this list back to useful mode *smile*
And as always ... if any of you have any questions feel free to email me
in private, and try to keep the list to genealogy talk. Thanks bunches
and let's get started cousins!!
- Nikki
