Indeed she has been a brick wall.
As far as proving James actually died in the Civil War - no I have no proof either. I do
know Sarah was listed as widowed in 1880, and he dropped off all census before 1870 (she
is listed livin alone with kids)
I was only told by another Callis researcher many years back that he was a Private in
Company H, of the 44th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. They also added that he was listed in
a hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee on August 18, 1862. He was wounded at Murfreesboro,
TN on December 31, 1862. Sent to hospital in Atlanta, GA on March 20, 1863 where he died
from his wounds. The website they claimed to have gotten this info from is
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss
Upon my own searching I found 3 James Callis - 1 in the 44th and 2 in the 55th regiment.
All 3 listed on Film Number M231 roll 7. No where have I been able to find or verify the
detailed info given by the other researcher, who I no longer have contact with.
If you find anything, keep me posted please, and I'll do the same.
