To Barrie Callinan-
I don't know if our Callinan's are related, but it's worth
enquiring.
My ggfather Dennis CALLINAN was born in 1791 in Ireland, and
according to "oral history" in the family came from Cork. I really
don't believe it, as I can find no confirmation of any
kind............<SNIP>........
Mary, at this stage all I know is that our Callinan branch came from Co. Clare,
but I have read somewhere (possibly the ancient O'Callaghan History
of various spellings) where the O'Callaghans were mainly from Cork
and after many wars lost everything and were transplanted to Co. Clare.
Please correct me anyone if I am wrong, as I have not studied this thoroughly.
In our family, the surname has always been spelt CALLINAN from the time
our ancestors left Co. Clare around the 1860's. We have never had a
Dennis in our family. However, in one of the photographs taken of
headstones at the old Rathborney churchyard, Co. Clare (where our
ancestors are buried), the name Dennis does appear.
Here are the inscriptions I have..........
"In loving memory of Thomas Callinan who died April 24, 1888 at
Ballyvaughan, and his wife Margaret, who died January 27, 1871 at
Ballyvaughan also their children."
John died 15 Jan 1898
James died Oct 7, 1909
Thomas died 13 Nov 1913
Dennis died 07 Apr 1927
Gretta died 21 January, 1936
Elizabeth died 17 January 1944
Wilhilmina died 03 May 1945
Kathleen died 06 March 1946
Mary-Jane died 06 Jul 1946
I don't know how/if this Thomas is connected to our Michael, but the
name Thomas runs right through our line to present day.
On another elaborate(looks like marble) modern headstone reads as follows:-
"In loving memory of a dear mother, Mary May Vaughan nee Callinan
Fau..rush (cannot read this word) Ballyvaughan,
Died 22 Feb 1933
At the bottom of the same headstone the surname VAUGHAN appears in large
letters and above that the following names:
Nora Theresa Callinan died 1932
Michael Callinan died 1944
Mary Ann Callinan died 1972
John Callinan died 197...(could be a 5 or 3)
On an older looking headstone in the same area reads:-
"In Loving Memory of
Michael Fitzgerald
Who died 1st May 1919 aged 48
And of his children
Norah, Willie & Cathleen
His wife Catherine
Died 8th June 1955 aged 80
~~~~~
Their daughter Susan Callinan
Died 8th Jan 1974 aged 71
Her husband Patrick
Died 28th Mar 1988 aged 85
R.I.P."
Last of all......."In loving memory of Mrs. Mary Callinan who died 14
October 1909 aged 78 years. Erected by her fond husband Patrick
Callinan for him and post. R.I.P."
This one I understand is ours (Mary above nee Murphy) the wife of
Patrick eldest son of our Michael who remained in Ireland.
I have not personally visited Ireland, but members of our family have
and were kind enough to bring back the above information for me.
If anyone recognises the above families or can expand on the Callinan
history please post to the List or write to me.
Many thanks,
Barrie Callinan
