Hi!
Good to see a Callinan web site going. I'll start off by giving the info on
my greatgrandfather, my original Callinan.
Dennis Callinan, born in Ireland in 1791 - according to oral history the most
likely site was in County Cork. He married Catherine (maiden name unk.) and
they came together to Boston where their first child Hannah was born in 1834.
In 1838 Dennis bought 120 acres in Highland Township, Oakland Cty, Michigan.
He and Catherine had 8 children together - Hannah, Jeremiah, John, Catherine,
Mary, Johanna, Dennis and Margaret.
Dennis died in November, 1850, and Catherine in 1855. They are buried in the
Pioneer Cemetery across the road from St. Patrick's Church on Union Lake Rd.
in Union Lake, Michigan, about 12 miles from their homestead.
I have been unable to locate a hometown in Ireland for Dennis and Catherine.
Very shortly after coming to Michigan, Dennis shortened their name to Callan,
and all his children used that name.
We talk about "brick walls", and I would dearly love to break this one down
and find out anything at all about my dearly beloved ggfather. Is there
anyone out there who might have a clue for me?
Very sincerely,
Mary Hosteny
