I am list manager for several surname lists with Rootsweb. Back 6 months
ago or so I made all my lists "closed" which only means that once you
subscribe to the list, then you can send and receive messages on the list.
That does not leave anyone out that wants to be on the list.
If a person should try to send a message to the list that has not
subscribed, then that "error" message will be sent to the list manager.
Then the list manager can decide if they want to forward the message on to
the list or not.
This has been a great help in halting spam messages and any other problem
messages so that they are not sent to the list by an outsider who is
interested in selling something rather than promoting genealogy research.
I'd vote for a closed list myself.
P.S. I am working on setting up my web page, and it will have a link to
the Callicos of Madison Co., AR (my wife's line). I'll let everyone know
when I have it set up.
