I am new to the list, and I am researching Margaret CALLENDER and William SPOTSWOOD from
Philadelphia. SPOTSWOOD was a printer/publisher in Philadelphia. He fought in the
American Revolution. I do not think he was related to the Virginia Spotswoods.
I recently found the obituary for William Spotswood. It was in the April 12, 1805
addition of Philadelphia's Poulson's American Daily Advertiser and it read as
follows:
"DIED, yesterday morning, Mr. William Spotswood, Printer and Bookseller, of this
city, in the 52d year of his age. His brother Printers and Booksellers are particularly
invited to attend his funeral from his late dwelling, No. 17 Chestnut Street, at 4
o'clock this afternoon."
So, we can establish that William Spotswood was born in 1753 or 54 and died in 1805.
His printing press was a block away from a well known Philadelphia Printer named Benjamin
Franklin. They were contemporaries. Sadly, the site of William Spotswood's
'dwelling' is now part of the northbound lanes of Interstate I-95. His wife was
Margaret Callendar. I am wondering if there is a connection between this Callender and
the Callender that was the political supporter of Thomas Jefferson?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
