Hi everyone.
I am finally at the point where I might be able to get some good strong
information on my RITTER RUTTER ancestry through old will abstracts.
Now of course we all know how many different ways we can find a name
spelled, shortened, anglicized, misspelled, misread, mistyped, unreadable or
not even there at all. Of course I'm running into that all over the place.
God bless all of the wonderful people who take the time to transcribe
records and get them online. I am forever grateful for the time that you
share and go cross eyed over old handwriting that is sooo awful at times.
Yes, I do too.
I have come across some errors though, no doubt, that I was just like, "Oh
my God, what were they thinking?" Ninety nine times out of one
hundred it was due to poor penmanship on the original writers behalf or a
bad copy so I can't bite off any one's head. Once again I am very
grateful!
Anyway, in my family tree I have John RITTER born about 1821 in
Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of John RITTER and Mary E STINSMAN ( or
DINSMAN, STINSON and possibly STINTON). John and Mary were my gggg
grandparents.
John named one of his children Callender and the name has been passed
through the family since. Family says that John's best friend was a John
CALLENDER and he named his son after him.
Now going through old wills I ran across a few people with name CALLENDER
but I have come across the CADWALLADER or something quite similar as a last
name many times.
I just came across it as a first name in the Silas and Esther JONES family
which is connected to the SUPPLEE family. I've come across both of these
names and thought that they might be connected to other RITTER, RUTTER,
REITER, RIGHTER families throughout Pennsylvania.
I received an email from someone who's Eleanor SUPPLEE (who is in the
previously mentioned family) married a John RITTER in 1809 in West
Philadelphia. Hmmm...could there be a connection?
I don't know for sure. Does anyone out there know if CALLENDER and
CADWALLADER are the same? Might anyone out there know of the CALLENDER /
RUTTER family connection?
Happy hunting!
Ella
