Linda,
I can't answer your questions directly, but maybe the attached will
provide some more clues. The first is an extract from my Callaway data;
the second is the descendants I have for my gg-gf, Chesley Callaway,
Jr. Chesley moved to the Elsberry area in about 1814, before MO was a
state. I think he may be a prime candidate for your ancestor. These
are all shown below. As these notes say, my grandmother worked in St.
Louis Co., just north of Overland. When I think about it, I wonder who
owned the stable - she was about 22 yrs old. Maybe this was owned by
another Callaway. I don't know. (An interesting parallel to our
histories, of no value to your research, is that I was born in Overland
and moved to St. Peters, where I lived in 1980.).
I think Roger offered some good suggestions. There is a pretty good,
but small library in Troy MO (near Elsberry) that may be able to help.
The Overland library didn't have much in the way of genealogy help, if I
remember right. But that was many years ago, that I tried it. I
skimmed thru the S.S. index for Callaway's that may have died in that
time frame since the data was supposed to go back to 1937. I saw none
prior to the 50's though so I suspect these Cd's.
Hopefully this will provide some clues? I'll be happy to share what I
have. Maybe if you get more clues I can help.
Good luck with your research.

According to [my Dad] Preston, after Bill Terry married [Ellen Nora
Callaway] in 1886, he lived at Brown and Lindbergh (NW corner), in St.
Louis County [just north of Overland], from about 1886 to 1890. (I
believe he told me that this was a stable where they raised racing
horses. I also believe he said that this was where William met Ellen
Nora Callaway.) In about 1890 he moved to St. Charles Rock Road and
Ashby (SE corner), where he rented 80 acres.

Linda,
I don't have anything in my Callaway data that shows a connection to your
father.
I am very sorry I can't help you. It must be frustrating not to know your
grandparents' identities.
I will copy this answer to the Callaway list. Perhaps someone there will
know something about your family.
My only suggestion, which you've probably tried, is to contact genealogy
societies and libraries around Elsberry, Overland, and St. Peters, Mo.
Maybe they'll have some records that will help you. The cemeteries and
funeral homes at Overland should be able to tell you of any male Callaway
who died around there around 1935. If you find a candidate and if Missouri
will let you see his death certificate, it ought to have his wife's name.
If you find a Mildred, most likely you've found your grandparents.
When the 1930 census is released in another three years, check all the
places you think they lived and see if you can find them.
Good luck.
