I am searching for the parents of Matthew D. (Davis or Derickson) CALLAWAY.
According to all census records, Matthew was born in GA about 1817.
I found Matthew (M. D.) in Attala County, MS in 1850. He was listed as M.
D. CALWAY, age 33, born GA. Family members were wife Sarah G. (33, GA),
William Mc (11, GA), John (8, GA).
M. D. CALLAWAY was next found in Scott County, MS in 1860. Family members
were wife Sarah (42,GA), John (17,GA), Jeff Davis (8, MS), Sarah (6,MS).
Also with the family was John GRIMES (26, GA). Son Wm. CALLAWAY (22?, GA)
was living next door.
In 1870 William (30) and his family were living next door to M. D. CALLAWAY
in Bell County, TX. Matthew died before 1880, as Sarah Glenn is found in
Bosque County, TX with children remaining at home. Sarah subsequently
married Elder F. D. L. KOEN.
Matthew D. married Sarah Glenn McWHORTER about 1836. They probably married
in GA, but I haven't located a marriage record yet. All the McWHORTER
genealogies show Matthew as Matthew Derixson GALLOWAY. He was definitely a
CALLAWAY as proven by land transactions during his lifetime. The McWHORTERs
were also in GA during this period.
Matthew's father was shown in a family bible as William CALLAWAY, born 1776.
I have not seen this bible as it is in private hands. Therefore, I don't
know who wrote the entries or when they may have been written.
I haven't found Matthew in 1840. I haven't found any proof or even an
indication of who Matthew's parents were, other than the information from
the bible stating his father was William.
Does anyone have any information that might lead me in the right direction
to find Matthew and William in 1840 and earlier in GA?
Thanks,
Gail
