Cemetery Records Old Riggs Cemetery; 1870 census Lane County, OR; Census
Whitman County, 1884-1885. From Rosalia-Battle Field to Wheat Field
1858-1988 by Edith E. Erickson. The Joseph Bourne family came west from
Missouri by covered wagon over the Oregon Trail in 1863. They lived at Walla
Walla, near where the present State Prison now stands. This is where
Benjamin Franklin and Lee Joseph were born. They then moved to the
Willamette Valley in Oregon until 1878 when they returned to Walla Walla,
Washington Territory. In 1879 they came north to the Palouse Country.
Joseph homsteaded and planted a timber culture just south of Rosalia, WA
(south of the old Milwaukee RR trestle). He did farming and carpentry work.
Built some of the earliest frame homes in Rosalia. He practiced homeopathic
medicine and was often called to minister to the sick and injured. With the
help of our grandmother he also delivered several babies before Rosalia had
a registered physician. Some time after the death of grandmother Bourn in
1885, Joseph married Huldah Lee, who was born 16 Mar 1830 and died in
Rosalia on 5 Nov 1899. She is burried in the old Riggs Cemetery east of
Rosalia. She and Joseph had been separated as the marriage didn't work out.
Samuel Riggs donated a piece of land on his homestead and established what
is now called the old Riggs Cemetery. This is where Joseph Stults and
Catherine Louisa Bourn are resting. We have pictures of this cemetery.
