While at the Jefferson co. IN historical library in Madison, my Aunt found a local 1860
census record for Monroe twp. #3 census that lists Calaway, Pricilla, age 59, b. Delaware;
Calaway, James H.; age 25, b. Ohio, farmer.
Another listing has Calaway, Thomas, age 56, b. Delaware, farmer; Calaway, Thomas, age 56,
b. Delaware, farmer; and Calaway, Elizabeth, age 60, b. Maryland.
Pricilla we believe is Pricilla Coverdale, 2nd wife of Jesse Callaway. James H. is her and
Jesse's son - is my 3rd Great Grandfather. Family lists his birthplace as Decature,
IN. This is the first official record that shows that Pricilla is his mother, other than a
letter between 2 of Jesse's grandchildren.
Jesse and Pricilla had about 9 children, some born in Dearborn co., IN.
Jesse the marries Pricilla (where?) and was later in Logan, Dearborn co., IN (1820
census), and is in Lancaster, Jefferson co., IN in 1840 census. We believe he is the Jesse
on the Mortality schedule 1850 - died in Oct 1850 in Jefferson co.
Thomas is Jesse's son with his 1st wife who we believe is Mahelah Lambdon. This family
(not sure when mother died) came to Oh/In border around Elizabethtown, Hamilton co., OH.
Thomas (born in DE in 1804) married Elizabeth HENRY in 1829 in Cincinnati, OH. They are in
the 1830 Hamilton co., OH and move to Jefferson co., IN by the 1840 census.
Thomas' brother William married (1st) Jane BOND (2) Mary Charlotte BONHAM and was in
the Whitewater, Elizabethtown, and Harrison, OH (and Harrison, IN) area.
My question is, are there other local census' or listing where I can find Jesse
Callaway in 1830. He does not show up on the federal census. Jesse nor Pricilla are in the
1850 census. Is anyone near Decatur or Jefferson counties that might have access to any
books to check for either of them? Or maybe have any other information?
Thanks.
