There is no evidence to suggest that Elizabeth Johnson had been married to a James
Johnson. At the time of the incident of the 'bastard child' Elizabeth was
indentured to Thomas Ball. Court records supply the information that the child was given
to Thomas Ball, apparently under indenture. No doubt Peter Callaway, who was not under
indenture, and Elizabeth Johnson planned to marry but the unfortunate incident of the
child prevented the marriage. Elizabeth, who was apparently soon to be released for her
indenture, was placed back under indenture for a period of time, to Thomas Ball. Peter
Callaway was fined a certain amount of tobacco. The 'experts' at the Maryland Hall
of Records assured us, more than 30 years ago, that Peter Callaway and Elizabeth Johnson
did marry. Some had said, years ago, that Elizabeth was daughter of Anthony Johnson. But
research conducted by our association revealed that Anthony Johnson was a 'free man of
color' - so Elizabeth would not have been his d!
aughter who married a white man, Peter Callaway, in that date and time. Anthony Johnson,
however, was owner of much property, rather wealthy for his time. His property was
primarily in the Delaware part of the eastern shore.
